The Samsung Galaxy S8 is Samsung's second best high-end smartphone, although it hit the market on April 28 and has recently been overtaken by the Galaxy Note 8. The device brought a renewal in the design of the Galaxy line, long awaited weather. But not only that, but the new Korean mobile also bets on increasingly complete accessories, full of adapters and even the quality headset of the AKG brand.

Samsung Galaxy S8 technical characteristics
The smartphone came in five color options: black, silver, silver violet, blue, and pink. The metal side is clear in silver, blue, pink and lilac, being dark only in the black model. The accessories were also renewed, leaving the color white for the option in black.
In the packaging is a Samsung Concierge card, a specialized customer service for the best customers. The instruction guide contains information on how to pass data from your old smarptone to the new Samsung Galaxy to the S8.
While the charger is the same as the 2A from before, but the USB cable is now Type C. Another standout feature is the AKG headset that comes with three different sizes of silicones.
Finally, we have two adapters: the first serves to convert from USB-C to micro USB, while the second converts to a traditional USB. In this way, any type of USB cable can be connected to your Galaxy S8.
The Samsung Galaxy is a totally different smartphone from what has already been seen in the market. It is a great product and a little expensive, although when you have it in your hand it is easy to see why.
Design and construction
The Samsung Galaxy S8 maintains the combination of metal and glass from the previous generation. The bad news is that there is no more distinction between the conventional line and Edge, in this way, the S8 comes with a curved screen, as well as its Plus variant.
Another change is that there are no longer buttons under the screen, which helped to reduce the edges of the phone considerably, providing a wide screen, although it is still compact.
The metal side has a mirror finish, which may be less refined than the S7's matte finish, but it presents the same level of quality. The good news is that the black color brings dark side, being the most discreet of the other four color options.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 is covered by two glass plates with Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back, which guarantees a high index of protection against impacts and risks. But unfortunately, the mobile ends up being fragile in falls, making the use of a protective case mandatory.
Screen and sound
The screen is just brilliant, very clear and crisp, and it offers lovely color rendering to make watching movies a dream, and that's before you have even realized the fact that it's wrapped in the chassis in a way that Makes it have a bigger screen than iPhone 7 Plus.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a 5.8-inch screen with QuadHD + resolution, that is, here we have 1, 440 pixels horizontally with 2, 960 pixels vertically, resulting in 570 pixels per inch.
The screen has the 18.5: 9 ratio, different from the traditional 16: 9, which helped reduce the upper and lower edges and keep the smartphone more compact than the Samsung S7 Edge with 5.5-inch screen.
The new screen of the Samsung is capable of reaching 780 lux of brightness when measuring with a lux meter, one of the highest being on the AMOLED screen. In addition, the panel has HDR, allowing you to further enhance the brightness with content that comes optimized for HDR.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 allows you to choose between three resolutions: the standard FHD + (1080 x 2220), HD + (720 x 1480) and the native one. You can also choose between four levels of color saturation, and match the hue of each primary color and the temperature of the white.
However, if the screen is exciting, we cannot say the same about the sound. The Samsung Galaxy S8 maintains the same mono speaker from previous generations. It is capable of high volume, but does not reproduce bass effectively, delivering a dry, impact-free sound. The AKG earphone, on the other hand, delivers a much more balanced sound, but ends up distorting when the volume is at maximum.
The glass is curved on both sides, with the popularity of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge convincing the South Korean brand that the time has come to make all of its high-end phones appear rounded and shiny, with the extra features of the system Edge by default..
Hardware and performance
The Samsung Galaxy S8 was released in two versions: with Snapdragon 835 for the United States and China; and a global version, which comes with the Exynos 8895 CPU itself. Both sets feature 10nm lithography, ensuring low power consumption.
The Exynos 8895 is a processor consisting of eight cores divided into two blocks, the first with four cores working at the maximum speed of 2.3 GHz and another four cores with a speed limited to 1.7 GHz. The first is responsible for the heavy tasks, while the second deals with the simplest processes.
The GPU present in the Exynos 8895 is the Mali-G71 MP20 with a top speed of 546 MHz. It may seem like a low speed for a high-end smartphone, but since we have 20 graphics processing cores, it is strong enough to cope with any 3D application and game using the native resolution of the screen.
As for memory, the device has 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, where 54 GB are available to the user. If this is still not enough for you, it is possible to expand the memory with the use of microSD cards of up to 256 GB.
Two camera
The main camera of the Galaxy S8 has not shown a remarkable evolution compared to the last generation. Here we have a rear camera with a 12 megapixel sensor with Dual Pixel technology, f / 1.7 aperture and the ability to record video in Ultra HD at 30 frames per second.
On the front, the smartphone had a more significant advance. The maximum resolution went up to 8 megapixels in this generation, but it still has the same f / 1.7 aperture and the ability to record Quad HD videos, as before. The sensor is the ISOCELL S5K3H1.
What you see is that the Galaxy S8 camera offers the same excellent quality present from the last generation (S7 and S7 Edge). A high level of detail and excellent image stabilization can also be seen in the videos.
Battery and Software
One point that disappointed in the Galaxy S8 is in its 3, 000 mAh battery, the same capacity present in the Galaxy S7. The device gained 0.7 more inches of display, but it has a more advanced 10nm processor. The result is that the battery performs better than the previous model, but only a few more minutes.
The recharging time is around 1 hour and 40 minutes with the 2A charger with Adaptive Fast Charging. With a battery charge it is possible to watch videos for 14 hours, record videos for 4 hours, make video calls for 5 hours or voice calls for 16 hours.
Doing a test, simulating a more practical use with the Galaxy S8, the following results are obtained:
- The Smartphone supports full-day use without any problem. Full use of social networks (Use of Community Manager), playing sporadically, taking daily photographs and classic use in electronic messaging. The application that consumed the most battery was voice calls, followed by Samsung's proprietary music.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 came to the market with Android 7.0 Nougat and so far has not received the update to the Oreo version. Here we have the TouchWiz interface released on the Galaxy Note 8 and which has been improved in the Nougat update for the S7.
What changes is that we have a new Samsung launcher that not only allows you to accommodate all apps on the initial screen, but also maintains the classic design of leaving separate apps on another screen. The Bixby assistant is another novelty present here, which has a side screen dedicated to the best Google Now style.
To access Samsung's personal assistant, just swipe left on the home screen or press the dedicated Bixby button on the left side of the smartphone. Features are very limited, at the moment, but Samsung promises that its artificial intelligence will be superior to rivals Google and Apple. Although we are not very convinced by Bisby and we prefer to leave it completely deactivated.
Overall, Samsung software offers good performance and free of crashes, but even with powerful hardware it is still common to feel little lag in animations.
Biometric sensor
Most mobile users today are looking to use a fingerprint to unlock the mobile as it is a safe thing and means you don't have to type your PIN multiple times a day.
It's a good idea, it's safe enough for most people, and it just works.
With the Galaxy S6, Samsung got a correct biometric unlock, but things have become difficult and confusing with the Galaxy S8.
You can unlock this phone with your face, a fingerprint, or an iris scan, in increasing order of security level, making the S8 one of the most secure phones out there.
However, by creating a large screen on the front of the Galaxy S8, Samsung has moved the fingerprint scanner to the back of the phone and placed it out of reach of most fingers when holding the phone properly. natural.
As a result, you'll have to hold the phone in an unnatural position in the palm of your hand to reach the scanner with your finger, and thanks to the elongated shape of the fingerprint sensor, it can take a couple of tries to register.
The fingerprint scanner is therefore too far away to be used naturally. We have also noticed that the camera gets dirty very easily, and on some occasions we have gone a bit crazy, thinking it was a software problem. L
Iris scanner
So how does the iris scanner work? The South Korean manufacturer implemented this function correctly, but it is still not perfect.
There are times when it's flawless, where you will simply turn on the phone and it will unlock instantly, as the S8 has seen your eyes and confirmed your identity.
Other times, when you're walking or in low light, the iris scanner just fails, although, oddly, it works well in acute darkness.
Facial recognition
Despite being the default option, the phone does not recognize the face too often and does not work in low light.
There is nothing more infuriating in this feature than the fact that you cannot see if you are positioning your face correctly. There is a suitable angle to maintain it, but it is not indicated on the screen.
The solution would be to use Smart Lock, where you can configure trusted places or connected devices to confirm your identity.
This means that if you leave the phone at work or at home, someone can jump right into the phone, so with Smart Lock you're basically preventing a thief from accessing the data if you lose the Galaxy S8 on the train, for example.
Bixby voice assistant
The other great feature that launches with the Samsung Galaxy S8 is Bixby, the rival Samsung's voice assistant to Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa, and Google's Assistant.
Bixby is Samsung's big move in its bid to compete in the artificially intelligent assistant arena, and it clearly believes it can succeed, despite being late for the competition.
The objective is to make Bixby an indispensable accompaniment in your daily life, reminding you of things when you need them, letting you know what you are seeing and being a unique option for all the information you need.
In fact, Samsung is so sure that Bixby is going to be brilliant that a button dedicated exclusively to this function was placed on the side of the phone.
Yes, a phone that can't even have the fingerprint scanner in an accessible place has a dedicated button for the Bixby wizard.
Bixby is quite mundane however, despite having added voice functionality at the moment. It currently only has Korean and American English, and is inherently inaccurate for the voice.
DeX Desktop Dock
Away from the other end of the Bixby interaction is the new DeX desktop docking system for the Galaxy S8. It is a small hardware accessory that is no bigger than a wireless charger that allows you to connect your Galaxy S8 to a keyboard, mouse and monitor.
The interface of the Galaxy S8 adapts elegantly to fill the PC monitor, and Samsung's own applications have been designed so that they can be resized and operated with a keyboard and mouse.
Samsung has also entered into agreements with Adobe and Microsoft to bring their most popular applications to the big screen. The only question is to know how other non-optimized applications will work, and who will invest in these docks and these settings to use DeX on a regular basis.
Final words and final conclusion
The Samsung Galaxy S8 brought several improvements compared to the S7, but it sins by keeping the same speaker and battery, in addition to incorporating a very poorly positioned fingerprint reader.
Without a doubt it is a phone that should be one of the first to consider when deciding which new phone to buy. The large, bezel-less display is truly iconic and beautiful, and the display quality is excellent.
The fingerprint scanner that is placed on the back of the phone is a bad decision by Samsung, just like the iris scanner and facial recognition do not work anywhere well enough to be a real consideration. Finally we choose to place a pattern or activate the PIN system for greater speed.
However, the improved battery life and tight camera will be among the best you'll find in a high-end high-end smartphone.
Now the Samsung Galaxy S8 can be found for a price of 529 euros, we believe that it is an ideal option to acquire a high quality Smartphone at a more than correct price. Although personally I would not spend more than 500 euros on a high-end Smartphone... ?
ADVANTAGE |
DISADVANTAGES |
- SUPER AMOLED HDR10 screen, IP68 certification and spectacular design. |
- If you do not buy a quality case, you have all the ballots that the screen breaks. |
- One of the best cameras on the market. | - Bixby Assistant, it is super intrusive (even "disabled"). |
- Spectacular performance. | - Autonomy is improvable. |
- Fast and quality camera |
- Mono speaker. |
- Now it has a good price. |
The Samsung Galaxy S8 offers cutting-edge technology, but it is a phone that at its launch was a little expensive. But now it has become a very good option at a cost of 520 euros.
The packaging of the smartphone in some countries is lower, but it comes with the same accessories: charger, USB cable, AKG headphones, silicones in three sizes, hybrid tray key, adapters and instructions guide.
Despite having a 5.8-inch screen, its thin edges make the device quite compact, what's more, it reminds us of a 5.2-inch terminal rather than a close to 6-inch one. However, the glass finish leaves it slippery and it is essential to purchase a quality cover (forget to buy Chinese covers). Our favorites are the Nilkin for home and the Ringkle for going out or on trips.
It comes with the same TouchWiz that was released for the Galaxy S7 in the Nougat update, but the Bixby button ends up being accidentally activated easily (it throws us a bunch of warning whenever it can), which can be annoying. These notices are impossible to eliminate and it is a great handicap.
The S8's Super AMOLED display features HDR, improving brightness and delivering even higher quality. The speaker, however, is still mono, but the AKG earphone offers excellent sound quality.
