Samsung is already very popular in the camera market, a fact already demonstrated with the admirable performance of the cameras integrated in the Galaxy S7 / S7 edge, Note 5 and the Galaxy S6.

Now, it looks like the tech giant has plans to further distance itself from its competitors by developing a 1 / 1.7 ”size CMOS sensor and a large f / 1.4 aperture.

Samsung prepares a camera with a 1 / 1.7 "sensor and f / 1.4 aperture for the Galaxy S8

In comparison, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge have 1 / 2.5 ”sensors, although the devices continue to take impressive photos and in fact were recently named the best mobile cameras by the DxOMark benchmark portal.

As for megapixels, the new Samsung sensor could take photos with an amount of between 18 and 24 megapixels, which would be a huge leap considering that the current flagships of the company offer only 12 megapixels of resolution.

What benefits would the new sensor bring?

Simply put, being larger, the sensor would capture more light, thus improving the camera's ability to produce more detailed and less noisy images, and with a greater dynamic range than other smaller sensors.

Additionally, the new sensor would offer improved performance in low light conditions. Perhaps the only unknown will be how Samsung will manage to fit the new sensors into the chassis of smartphones, taking into account that each new generation is even thinner than the previous one.

Other smartphones with large sensors

As a reminder, some camera phones whose sensors are very large are the Panasonic Lumix CM1 (1 ”sensor size), the Nokia PureView 808 (1 / 1.2” sensor), the Nokia Lumia 1020 (1 / 1.5 ”sensor) and others.

Apart from this information, it is also speculated that Samsung would be developing a new 1 / 2.3 "sensor for its cameras, although it is not as interesting as the previous sensor.

It is still unknown if Samsung will decide to implement this new sensor in any phone this year, although there are many possibilities to see it within the next Galaxy S8.

Until then, we will have to settle for the performance of the Galaxy S7 / S7 edge cameras.
