Samsung is one of the world leaders in the manufacture of silicon chips and has no intention of throwing in the towel, the South Korean giant is already ready a new, more refined manufacturing process to improve the performance of its chips and those of third parties that resort to its foundry.

Samsung already has the 8 nm ready

Samsung has officially revealed that its new 8nm LPP (Low Power Plus) manufacturing process is ready for production of the first chips, this new process offers up to a 10% performance boost over the company's current 10nm process and up to 10% area reduction of transistors.

This node is a refinement of Samsung's existing 10nm production node, which makes this process actually 10nm +, but a name change is applied for marketing, as we remember that there is no standard when it comes to Measure the size of the transistors so that each foundry can express it differently. This means that the manufacturing processes of two companies can be very different despite apparently being the same nm.

NVIDIA CEO says Moore's Law is dead and GPUs will replace CPUs

The advantages of this new process node are the fact that it builds on Samsung's existing technology, allowing Samsung to rapidly accelerate 8nm production by adapting its existing 10nm technology. Samsung has also been able to pass qualification with this new node three months ahead of schedule, allowing the company to produce 8nm functional chips ahead of schedule.

8nm will be Samsung's final node prior to its move to EUV (Extreme Ultra Violet) with its 7nm manufacturing node, ushering in a new era for Moore's Law, allowing manufacturers to break some of the limitations that have been foiling progress in the industry.

7LPP will be the first semiconductor process technology to use an EUV lithography solution. The collaborative effort of Samsung and ASML developed 250W of maximum EUV power, which is the most important milestone for the insertion of EUV in high volume production. The deployment of EUV lithography will break the barriers of Moore's law scale, paving the way for generations of single nanometer semiconductor technology.
