The PC DRAM memory market is experiencing high levels of inventories and this oversupply is expected to cause a notable drop in prices in the first six months of 2019.

The high levels of stock of DRAM modules is causing their decrease in prices

Market demand remains weak due to the low season and the significant amount of inventory carried over from the previous quarter. Contract prices for DRAM products have already dropped 15% month-over-month (MoM) in January and are expected to drop in February and March. The PC DRAMs market is anticipated to experience a quarter-on-quarter decline of 20% in the first quarter of 2019, while the server DRAMs market is down nearly 30% from the previous quarter.

According to the latest analysis by the people at DRAMeXchange , the DRAM inventory problem for PCs and servers will persist in the second quarter of 2019. A long period is needed to deal with inventory problems, even if there is some recovery of the demand. New emerging technologies such as 5G and automotive electronics are in the early stages of development and will not greatly influence the demand for DRAM memories.

The fall in prices will persist throughout the first half

DRAM providers have reduced their manufacturing capabilities and this is expected to reduce the gap between supply and demand. The market for mobile DRAMs will experience less price variation, but demand for products is still too weak to prevent prices from falling, experts say.

Currently, the average contract price for 8GB DRAM PC modules is below $ 45, and is expected to drop 25% when it closes this quarter.
