One of the most frequent problems when using USB devices is the problem when ejecting USB storage device. It is always recommended that before removing a USB device connected to the computer, we first choose the option to " safely remove hardware ". But this does not always work, and in which case we will get a nice warning window that the operation could not be carried out.

The consequences of disconnecting the device before doing this can be very varied. Since nothing happens at all, which could be in most cases, until the drive loses all the information and is in RAW disk state. To avoid this, follow these procedures to try to safely remove the disk.

Solution 1: close applications associated with the USB drive

Before we panic about a possible explosion from our team, we must take into account a couple of things.

If we have recently been editing files within the storage drive. It is possible that some applications have been open, although apparently we do not see them. To make sure there is nothing open related to USB we will do the following:

We will press the key combination " Ctrl + Shift + Esc " to open the Windows task manager. Or if we prefer, right-click on the taskbar and choose " Task Manager"

In the applications and background processes section we look to see if any of the applications that we had open remain active. If we do not find any in principle, the one that we should restart is the Windows Explorer.

We look for " Windows Explorer " and right-click on it. We choose " Restart " to restart the Windows browsing environment.

Now we try again to safely remove the portable hard drive to see if we can.

Solution 2: Using Windows 10 troubleshooter

If I can't eject external hard drive in Windows 10, the first thing we could try is the system troubleshooter. In this case the procedure will be as follows:

We go to the icon that we only use to extract the hard disk and click on " Open devices and printers"

A window will appear showing the paired devices, printers and USB disks connected to the computer

Right click on our storage unit and choose " Troubleshoot"

When the process ends, we will try again to extract it safely and see what happens

Solution 3: Eject USB with device manager

This option is recommended if we have USB drives or portable hard drives that do not have any extra software installed on the computer, such as multimedia hard drives.

We can also do the procedure of uninstalling the hard drive so that the system considers it removed. In this case we will do the following:

  • Right click on the Start icon and choose the option " Device Manager "

  • We will open a window that shows a list of devices in which we will have to identify our storage unit or hard drive. Be careful selecting your primary hard drive! Now we right-click on the unit in question and choose the " uninstall " option. We wait a few seconds for the process to finish and you can extract the device.

Do not worry that you have uninstalled it because when you reconnect it, it will be available again as normal.

Solution 4: Close Windows 10

The last option we have is the typical one.

We can log out with the user that we have active in Windows. To do this, press the key combination " Ctrl + Alt + Del " and choose " Close session ". after this we can extract the unit since all the related processes in it will have stopped.

Or we can also directly turn off the equipment and thereby remove the storage unit.

Well these are all possible solutions if I can't extract external hard drive in Windows 10.
