The year is off to a strong start as Sonos has sued Google for allegedly stealing its speaker technology and using it on its Google Home devices. In addition, the firm has commented that they also plan to fight Amazon for the same reason, but they cannot afford to fight the two companies at the same time. So Google is the first.

Sonos sues Google for stealing its smart speaker technology

In this lawsuit there are a total of five patents involved, as it has been known. In addition, they have requested that they ban sales of Chromecast laptops, Pixel smartphones and Google speakers in the United States.

Legal battle

Sonos claims that Google has blatantly and knowingly copied its proprietary technology. In addition, they comment that despite their many efforts over the years, Google has never been willing to work with them, or establish a relationship that will benefit the two parties. So they have no choice but to take this path.

It was in 2013 when the firm taught Google how the speakers interact with each other wirelessly. In 2015 Chromecast Audio arrived and in 2016 Google Home to the market, which is said to use this technology that Google learned from the firm, but copied.

Sonos has already contacted Google on occasion, letting them know that they have violated a patent. But they have not received a response from the Mountain View firm. Both Google and Amazon say they have not violated these patents. We will see how this legal battle ends, which will undoubtedly generate headlines in the coming months.
