Sony, leader in the sale of Smartphone worldwide, announced a month ago its new flagship, the Sony Xperia Z5. During a week of hard tests we already have the complete analysis and it is positioning itself among the five best in the market with IP68 certification.

Technical characteristics Sony Xperia Z5

We feel that Sony has lowered the quality of the box that houses the smartphone. We remember somewhat stronger that of the Sony Z3 Compact. In the box we have little information… so we detail the ones that we will find inside:

  • Sony Xperia Z5. Charger and microUSB cable.

The Sony Xperia Z5 features an aluminum designed frame and a frosted glass back, offering a very attractive design. Every detail is taken care of to the smallest detail, such as; the incorporation of metallic buttons, a fingerprint reader and a unibody format that does not allow us to remove the battery.

Frosted glass is a treatment that is done to the glass so that it becomes translucent while receiving the light, that is, it gives a blurring effect. Thanks to this effect the new Sony Xperia Z5 does not have marks left on the back.

It has a 5.2 ″ inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (441 ppi density) that offer great quality in its colors (Triluminos). To protect yourself from scratches, it has the Gorilla Glass 3 protection signed by the Corning company.

It has resistance to water and dust (IP68 certification.)

On the right side we have the fingerprint button. Although I am surprised that the volume button is so low. The camera button has a very successful location.

In the upper area we have the mini-jack outlet, in the lower one the microUSB connection and a hole to tie a rope for transport (not very useful).

Finally on the left side we have the area enabled to insert our nano-SIM card and the removable microSD.

The screen also has a useful surface of 70% of the front area, so it is quite improvable. The size of the terminal is 146 x 72.1 x 7.45 mm and has a weight of 156.6 grams. And we can find it available in four colors: Black, Gold (Green), Green and white.

Inside it houses the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 (MSM8994) 2.00 GHz eight-core SoC processor and 64-bit architecture. As expected, it comes equipped with 3 GB of RAM and the powerful Adreno 430 graphics card that will allow us to enjoy any Android game without flaws.

Regarding its internal storage we have 32GB as standard, which we can expand to 200GB via microSD. This enlargement will be cheap and we will have no limitations when it comes to making a large number of images and videos.

About connectivity, we have support for both 2G / 3G / 4G LTE lines, WiFi 802.11 b / g / n connection, Bluetooth 4.1 LE, MHL NFC, nano-SIM card, A-GPS, Accelerometer, Barometer, Compass, Gyroscope, FM RADIO, light and proximity sensor. We detail the supported frequencies:

  • 2G Bands: 800, 900, 850, 1800 MHz

    Supported 3G Bands: 900, 1900, 850, 2100 MHz 4G Bands: 1800, 1900, 2100, 2300, 2600, 700, 800, 850, and 900 MHz.

As expected, it has a 4G LTE connection. Perfect for rural areas or far from the city.

Fingerprint reader

This fingerprint reader is having a lot of debate in the forums, because there are many users who like its double touch (first touch: turn on the screen and second touch detects the fingerprint for unlocking) others prefer a single touch.

Also because its position makes it uncomfortable to use with the left hand… while with the right it is ideal for the index, middle and thumb fingers.

Failure? With the right hand the margin of error is minimal, I can assure you that you have hardly failed me by reading my fingerprint. While with the left hand it has cost him more work.

Operating system and interface

Regarding the operating system, we have the popular Google Android in its 5.1.1 Lollipop version and an interface that gradually reminds us of pure Android. Although we still have several applications installed by default and most are very useful.

The Sony Xperia Z5 is fluid, fast and falls in love every minute we use it with its own launcher. It will soon be updated to Android Marshmallow (Android 6) so we will have all the improvements of the latest operating system.

For those of you who have Playstation 4 we have the PS4 Remote application that allows us to connect to our game console and make our Sony Xperia Z5 mirror. That is, use the smartphone screen as the main screen, while you go to another room or as a complement screen (For example, in Fallout 4).

Multimedia

The multimedia section we have a 23 megapixel rear camera with Sony IMX230 Exmor RS sensor capable of focusing in 0.03 seconds and recording video at 4K 30 fps, 1080p 60 fps and 720p 120 fps, as for the front camera it has a 5 megapixel unit that does very well to make quality selfies. It also allows us to perform slow motion. I recommend that you take a look at our video.

Battery and fast charge

It has a 2900 mAh non-removable battery and offers a fairly good autonomy. In my case I have reached about 5 hours of screen with a demanding performance. That is to say, it fulfills more than enough to reach the end of the day and would even endure the night without load.

It is also important to tell you that it has the stamina and ultra-stamina options that limit the Sony Xperia Z5 with savings. The first one we can customize at our whim (screen, applications, camera, 4G / 3G data) and the second one will only allow us to make calls and receive sms.

It incorporates fast charge but does not include a charger with this technology. In my case I have opted for an Aukey PA-T2 Quick Charge 2.0 for just 20 euros on Amazon. How long does it take to charge? For example… a full charge of 10% to 100% is ready in less than 60 minutes, one pass! Without a doubt, it is one of the great advantages of incorporating the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor.

Final words and conclusion

The Sony Xperia Z5 is without a doubt one of the best five high-end smartphones of 2015. Both for its design, image quality, camera and processor. Details such as the expansion of the internal memory by microSD, FM radio or the demanded NFC connectivity are points that guarantee it.

I would have liked the charging connector to be Type-C because currently all high-end models incorporate it and it is becoming a standard. I also did not like that it did not incorporate a fast charging wall charger, which forces us to buy a separate one.

It is currently in store for 599 euros. It is not the best price on the market… but it is worth every euro it costs. If you have a Sony Xperia Z3 and you want to switch to the Z5, we recommend that you wait until March… because a new version with many improvements will possibly appear.
