Star citizen abandons dx12 and will use only vulkan

Star Citizen can boast of being the game with the most money raised through donations, exceeding $ 140 million as of January 2017. With several years of development behind it, the video game has seen an evolution in all aspects, but always maintaining the same ambition, making the greatest game of all time.
Star Citizen abandons DirectX 11 and DirectX 12
With this objective, the RSI developer is going to make some important changes for the entire graphics engine, dispensing with the DirectX 12 API to use only Vulkan.
Vulkan is a recent multiplatform API that allows access to low-level hardware, in this sense it is similar to DirectX 12 but it is much more versatile, since it is not exclusive like the Microsoft variant and can be used on Windows, Mac, Android and even Linux. For the most knowledgeable, it would become the replacement for the new generation OpenGL.
From now on, Star Citizen will only be developed using the Vulkan API and neither DirectX 11 nor DirectX 12 will be used . Why has this decision been reached? RSI explains it.
Years ago we stated our intention to support DX12, but since the introduction of Vulkan, which has the same set of features and performance benefits, it seemed like a much more logical rendering API to use, as it doesn't force our users to upgrade to Windows 10 and it is possible to run the game on all Windows and Linux systems. ” says Ali Brown, director of graphic engineering at RSI.
We recommend reading our PC Gaming Configuration 2017.
It seems clear that the intention of RSI is to focus its efforts on a single API that could be run on all systems, since the game will also be released for Linux and you will not need to have Windows 10 to play it. Star Citizen is currently under development and looks like its final release is going to be long.
