SteelSeries returns to the fray with a new mouse model that targets true 1-to-1 tracking with minimal latency, low weight, and simple design. We talk about nothing more and nothing less than the SteelSeries Rival 310. Will it measure up? Let's see it.
An old woman known as SteelSeries needs no introduction. The Danish brand has been present in the peripheral world since 2001 and from its hand some of the best keyboards, headphones and mice hit the market.
Unboxing of SteelSeries Rival 310
The contact with the SteelSeries Rival 310 presents an external packaging type cover in which we are shown an image of the mouse together with the logo of the brand and model. Three key strengths are highlighted below: Prism Lightning, Separate Buttons, and a custom optical sensor from the well-known PixArt brand, TrueMove 3. The SteelSeries Rival 310 is a mouse model compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems, data that we can also see discreetly located in the lower right corner.
Some additional information is detailed on the back of the cover, emphasizing sensor development specifically with E-sports in mind. The TrueMove 3 is a model with 12, 000 maximum DPI points and 350 IPS that makes a special effort to guarantee the user optimum sensitivity and smoothness of movement.
When we remove the outer cover we are greeted by a black cardboard box with a matte finish and a chest-like structure. Opening it reveals the SteelSeries Rival 310 perfectly embedded in a foam mold with a slot enabled for wiring.
The total content of the box is summarized in:
- SteelSeries Rival 310 Quick Start Manual
SteelSeries Rival 310 Skin
The SteelSeries Rival 310 is a mouse model that features a cover of plastic materials of different qualities and finishes. The chosen color is black combined with a dark gray tone rubber for the sides. Predominantly matte gloss, the plastic offers a slight roughness when you run your hands over it, which promises to delay the appearance of that slimy touch that we so often hate with sweat.
The tapered shape of the mouse offers a smooth curvature silhouette even at its peak. The hump is in a fairly centered position and offers ergonomics that fit perfectly with palmar or claw grip. The SteelSeries Rival 310 is a model created and designed for right-handed users in its form factor, so lefties should look for their closest alternative in the Sensei 310.
In the back we find the SteelSeries logo with a white finish. This area together with the ringed silhouette of the scroll button represent the two backlit areas of the SteelSeries Rival 310.
Continuing with the reverse side we appreciate an informative label with information on the brand, model, serial number and various quality certificates.
In the central area, the sensor slot is noticeable, protected by a slight curvature in the mouse structure itself.
The SteelSeries Rival 310 features a total of three small surfers. All of them have a slot for removal or replacement if necessary by compatible ones. In the lower area, the brand's logo is engraved as a bas-relief, finished off with a shiny resin coating.
Switches and buttons
The switches selected for the SteelSeries Rival 310 are guaranteed 50 million click mechanical pushbuttons designed with Omron.
Firstly, the M1 and M2 buttons are made up of independent pieces with an almost completely symmetrical presence on the top of the mouse. In its center we can find the scroll wheel that comes to us in turn covered by a non-slip gray rubber. It presents a slight irregular slightly striated pattern that facilitates its control. Right below it we have our button to change the DPI sensitivity between different levels.
The SteelSeries Rival 310 is a six button mouse, being able to find the remaining two on the upper left side. Both switches have the same plastic quality as the material used in the mouse cover.
In them we can observe an evident separation that establishes a very recognizable distance at the tactile level and makes it difficult to press one or the other by mistake. Fine engraved direction arrows are also observable on both sides of the gap.
The wire
The SteelSeries Rival 310 is a wired mouse model featuring a plastic sheathed cable with internal fiber reinforcement. The resulting finish is quite flexible and has a total length of two meters very generous. Both in its connection point and in the USB type A we find that the lining is especially protected against shocks, which is always appreciated.
Commissioning
It is time to see how the SteelSeries Rival 310 is spending them, so let's stop the nonsense and go to work.
Ergonomics
As previously mentioned, the SteelSeries Rival 310 is a right-handed form factor mouse model. Its dimensions are 12.7 cm long; 5.7 cm wide and about 4 cm maximum height. We can consider that it has intermediate dimensions, so that its handling becomes comfortable even for hands around 16 cm in length.
Its elevation is central and smooth, so that those users with a palmar or claw grip can use the SteelSeries Rival 310 with total comfort.
Sensitivity, acceleration and DPI test
The TrueMove3 sensor is optical, reaching a total of 12, 000 DPI and 350 IPS. Rather than focusing on the CPI, TrueMove3 was designed for reliable 1-to-1 tracking. Moving a specific distance on a mousepad results in the exact same distance on the screen, without introducing latency, interpolation, or affecting jitter reduction.
- Acceleration: The basic acceleration present in the SteelSeries Rival 310 is 50g, although the percentage can be changed in the SteelSeries Engine 3 software itself even for the deceleration factor. Pixel Skipping: Pixel skipping is an issue that becomes more aggressive the higher our manually set acceleration or deceleration percentage is. This issue gets worse along with a high DPI, so keep these factors in mind when calibrating your mouse with the options offered by SteelSeries Engine 3. Tracking: in-game target tracking is remarkably reliable if we add some points on the motion prediction bar (software). This provides greater stability to the line and can provide support when aiming reliably. Performance on surfaces: whether on a cloth, plastic or wooden mat, we have not found any setback with the sensor's sensitivity to different materials.
In this test bench you can see a series of two rows of squares that have been plotted increasing the acceleration and prediction of the software separately. The predictive tracking work has been very satisfactory for us but it becomes unwieldy with high acceleration. The same process has been followed in the line drawing shown below: first with a different prediction and then comparing the acceleration to the minimum and maximum.
All these tests have been carried out with an DPI percentage of 1600 points.RGB lighting
The RGB lighting of the SteelSeries Rival 310 is located on the scroll wheel and the brand's logo. Both zones are independently customizable and we can set specific patterns and color mixes from the Engine 3 software.
The illumination with maximum brightness is quite intense, although it is also due to the fact that the activity area is of a good size. We will delve into its configuration in the following software section for more detail.
software
With the SteelSeries Rival 310 we have the branded software, SteelSeries Engine 3 (currently). Issues of interest is that once we have configured our mouse with the desired specifications of sensitivity and lighting we can save the configuration in our local memory.
Once we access the specific panel of the SteelSeries Rival 310 we have two optional points of view to configure the mouse. On the right there is a panel that shows us the button assignments and the macro editor, while on the right we have an advanced configuration of the DPI, acceleration, deceleration, prediction and polling rate parameters.
Finally, within the central infographic of our mouse, the two backlit areas are visible. For each of them we can establish a specific pattern (predefined or that we create) as well as its speed.
Final Words and Conclusions on SteelSeries Rival 310
The mouse that SteelSeries brought us this time has been interesting to analyze. Its weight of 88 grams makes it slightly lower than average, so those players looking for something that allows them fast and stable movements may find that the SteelSeries Rival 310 responds very well in that regard. The choice of three surfers seems a bit small on their surface but we like the prospect of being able to easily remove them for replacement.
It is possible that the feel of the chosen plastic finishes would not have been our first option but it offers a good grip on the form factor and resistance to slipping by sweat. The non-slip silicone sides are generous and the rough texture presented is one of the issues that we liked the most, along with the presence of its large side buttons and easy tactile recognition.
We recommend reading: Best mice on the market.
SteelSeries Engine 3 software is a straight-to-the-point functional interface program. Issues to customize are immediately apparent and the availability of a local memory slot in the mouse completes the experience. Definitely the motion prediction settings is one of its strongest points to be taken advantage of by users and this is something that is reinforced by TrueMove3 sensor technology.
The SteelSeries Rival 310 is for sale on its official website for a price of € 69.99. Something that does not convince us is the absence of braided cable in its design, since it is usually common for mice of similar prices. Its 12, 000 maximum CPIs are an acceptable amount although competition with higher percentage models can be difficult to overcome. Broadly speaking, the SteelSeries Rival 310 has seemed to us a correct mouse, which responds well to user requirements and has competent configuration software. It does not bring great surprises but it does provide competition.
