SuperData researchers have released a new report focusing on the Fortnite Battle Royale phenomenon. The document reveals that Fortnite Battle Royale broke the $ 1 billion milestone in revenue from in-app purchases, a feat that demonstrates the tremendous success of Epic Games' free to play game.

Fortnite and Battle Royale dominate the video game audience

The report notes that Fortnite reached a staggering 574 million hours viewed on Twitch in May, far behind the second title on the table, League of Legends. When looked at as a whole, it 's the Battle Royale genre that literally dwarfs everything else, with nearly 700 million hours viewed in May. MOBA games rank second with 300 million hours viewed in that month, with shooters, trading card games, and sports games all behind.

According to SuperData, the growth of Battle Royale titles does not appear to negatively affect the number of viewers from other genres, although the report suggests that games followed by younger viewers are at greater risk by losing audience to some Battle Royale game.

SuperData expects 625% revenue growth for Battle Royale games from 2017 to 2018, particularly thanks to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout mode coming to market soon. While total Battle Royale revenue was 1.7 billion in 2017, the report estimates 12.6 billion in 2018 and 20.1 billion in 2019 thanks to substantial growth.

Lastly, SuperData analyzed the audience for Battle Royale, revealing that 36% of the audience comes from shooting games, 11% from role-playing games or action / adventure games, 9% from action games, 8% of sports games and another 8% of survival games, with the remaining 18% as a mix of additional genres.
