Samsung has officially released information about its new Z-NAND SZ985 SSD series, a product specially designed to counter one of the biggest emerging bottlenecks in the storage world, memory latency.

Samsung Z-NAND units promise to be cheaper than Intel Optane

Clearly, this latency hurdle must be overcome to improve storage devices, not only by allowing more data to be transferred in a given time, but also by allowing these storage media to respond to commands more quickly, allowing data to be transferred. deliver in a more timely manner and accelerate system performance.

Intel 's new Optane 3D XPoint memory is designed to address this memory latency problem just like Samsung's new Z-NAND, but given the latter's technology, it's cheaper to produce, with the goal of achieving great performance at a lower price than an Optane device.

With the SZ985 Z-NAND SSD, Samsung boasts that it can achieve sequential read and write performance of 3.2 GB / s and 750, 000 / 170, 000 IOPS of random read and write performance, both impressive performance figures for a NAND based SSD.

What is most impressive is the latency of the Z-NAND memories, which has been achieved both with the Z-NAND itself and with the changes in the design of the memory controller. Samsung says they have reduced latency up to 5.5 times compared to other NVMe SSDs, allowing data to be delivered much faster.

We still don't know when Samsung's first Z-NAND SSDs will hit the market, but it looks like they're getting closer.
