Thecus W4000

The presentation is premium with a large cardboard box, robust and with a presentation in full color. In it we can see the Windows Server logo and all the technical characteristics of the product. Once the box is open we find the following bundle:

  • Thecus W4000 server Seasonic power supply and power cable Mains cable Manuals and quick guide Screws and wrench set

The server measures 192 x 172 x 250 mm and weighs 4.38KG. Among its specifications we find a dual-core Intel Atom D270 processor at 2.13 Ghz, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, a solid state hard drive that includes the operating system and 4 removable Hot Swap bays.

We stand at the front. The first thing we see is that it is a server with the Windows Server 2012 Essentials operating system installed. We have two front USB 3.0, a power button and an LCD screen that will indicate information. It also features a window that covers the 4 3.5 / 2.5 ″ hard drive bays, each one is removable and has a key to prevent any slippage. All security is always good.

Both sides of the server are completely smooth and little else can we highlight about them. In the upper cover if we find a label with the Windows Server license number.

We look at the back of the Thecus W4000. Where it delights us with a power connection, an audio output, a VGA or D-SUB connection, HDMI, e-SATA, 2 x USB 2.0 and 2 x LAN, and a plate to use an expandable card and as a last reference to its cooling thanks to a 120 mm fan that expels hot air.

Once we open the server we find the hard disk booth and all the motherboard fixed on the left side. In the upper area we have a 64GB capacity ADATA SSD, which includes embedded Windows 2012 Server R2 Essentials. We also see a PCI Express X1 connection for a network card or other controller for hard drives and the possibility of expanding the equipment with up to 4GB of DDR3 SO-DIMM RAM.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

As a computer technician in administration and networks I have mounted many servers, including Linux (Debian, Opensuse and Fedora) or Windows. Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials is the lightest version of this range of operating systems as it is aimed at small businesses or home use with a two-processor computer and a maximum of 25 users. It basically simplifies cloud-based apps and services like Microsoft Azure and Office 365 helping to reduce effort and time.

Final words and conclusion

It is our first contact with the manufacturer Thecus and the taste in your mouth with your W4000 could not have been more satisfactory. We have a NAS that stands out for power, reliability and above all for a very contained price.

It is a 4-bay NAS with 2.13 Ghz Intel Atom D270 processor, 2GB of DDR3 RAM and a 64GB solid state hard drive that incorporates Windows 2012 Server inside. In our tests we have seen that its interface is via remote desktop and it is the closest thing between a server as an input range, since it really is a compact PC with the possibility of installing up to 4 GB of RAM and / or a PCI Express x1 card.

WE RECOMMEND YOU Western Digital WD Red SA500 Review in Spanish (Complete Analysis)

In our tests we have seen that the team's performance is perfect. It helps us both to use it with Windows options: share folders, P2P downloads (Torrente, eMule…) and make an Active Directory. Special Mention Me that Thecus watches security with all hard drives with separate keys.

Its current price in stores is $ 520 that the change is almost € 590, a more than fair price for both components and possibilities it offers. It can be purchased in the online stores Qloudea and Dakel on request.
