Threadripper 3000, the naming scheme would have been revealed

The International Serial ATA Organization (SATA-IO) may have given us a clue as to the name of the next Zen 2 based third generation Threadripper series processors .

Threadripper 3960X, 3970X, 3980X or 3990X are possible names

The next line of AMD CPUs, Threadripper 3000 or Threadripper 3, will be part of the "Ryzen 3000" family of product names. SATA-IO shows that that series will carry main names 'AMD Ryzen Threadripper 39x0X', with the lowercase x representing a number greater than “5” on the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X. That leaves us with only a handful of options: Threadripper 3960X, 3970X, 3980X, or 3990X.

AMD named its first generation of Threadripper processors as 1900X, 1920X, and 1950X for the 8, 12, and 16-core versions, respectively. I name the second generation 2920X, 2950X, 2970X, and 2990X for the 12, 16, 24, and 32-core variants, respectively.

The new 3000 series Threadripper, also known as "Castle Peak", is expected to start with 24 cores and potentially climb to 64 cores, according to some rumors. AMD could name them as follows: 3960X for the 24-core version, 3970X for the 32-core version, 3980X for the 48-core version, and 3990X for the 64-core version. This is pure speculation, of course.

AMD is unlikely to release anything below the 3950X for low-end Threadrippers, as this could imply that they underperform Ryzen 9. It would also be quite confusing for consumers.

The launch of the new generation Threadripper should take place in November, so we will soon know all the new lineup that AMD has in store for us.
