AMD celebrates the first anniversary of the launch at Ryzen. The new line, of course, brought excitement back to the desktop CPU market and allowed AMD to compete against Intel on a peer-to-peer basis. But AMD has also done so in the server market with its Threadripper processors.

AMD wants to continue reaping successes with its Ryzen processors

For the next 12 months after launch, AMD has built on its initial success and kept the momentum going. This has been achieved thanks to the monthly launch of a Ryzen product so far. Here are some of the highlights from the past year:

  • March: Launch of Ryzen desktop processors on the market with Ryzen 7. April: Launch of Ryzen desktop processors 5. June: Announced line of Ryzen PRO desktop processors designed to meet the demands of today's workplace with intensive use of computers and commercial grade features. July: The Ryzen desktop processor lineup is completed with the launch of Ryzen 3 targeting the mainstream desktop market. August: Surprised everyone with the announcement of the highest performing desktop processor of all time, Ryzen Threadripper. October: Introduction of Ryzen Mobile processors with Radeon Vega Graphics, which includes the world's fastest processor for ultrathin laptops. February 2018: Launch of Ryzen APU, combining high-performance Radeon Vega architecture with Zen CPU cores on a single chip.

Second generation Threadripper

AMD is not resting on its laurels, but is advancing further than 2018. The highly anticipated 2nd generation Ryzen is about to come out, slated for a launch in April. This new processor will be based on a 12nm Zen + architecture. The best part is that this CPU is compatible with existing AM4 motherboards. This means that unlike Intel users who had to upgrade to a Z370 chipset motherboard for the Coffee Lake CPUs, Ryzen users can just keep using their AM4 motherboards.

Ryzen Threadripper is expected to arrive after the second generation Ryzen 7/5/3 processors, during the second half of 2018. However, there is still no confirmation if it will continue to use the same TR4 socket.
