We return with a new keyboard from the young ThunderX3 brand, this time it is the ThunderX3 TK40 that offers us a new generation of hybrid Hybrid-H mechanical buttons that promise the best of mechanical and membrane keyboards in the same device. If you are looking to renew your keyboard do not miss our review of the ThunderX3 TK40 that promises to be one of the best alternatives on the market and at a super-competitive price.
First of all we thank Thunder X3 for giving us the TK40 for analysis.
ThunderX3 TK40: technical characteristics
ThunderX3 TK40: Unboxing and Description
The ThunderX3 TK40 comes to us in a very attractive presentation led by a box of quite contained dimensions for this type of product, we see that in its design in which the corporate colors of the brand predominate, among which black and orange stand out. On the front we see an image of the keyboard as well as the layout it presents, this time we find a distribution of Spanish keys, we thank the brand that has given us the exact same product that most of our readers will be able to buy.
In the back, all the characteristics of the keyboard are detailed, among which we find a removable wrist rest, a maximum quality design and of course the two main protagonists of this keyboard: the configurable RGB LED lighting and its hybrid mechanisms that combine the best of mechanical switches and membranes, we will talk about this later.
Something that we miss is a window that allows us to test the buttons before going through the box, a detail that we will understand perfectly since when we open the box we find another box inside in white, this being the one that really houses the keyboard in its inside. All a detail of the great care that the brand has put in the product for its maximum protection and that it reaches the least of the user in the best possible way.
We also found a palm rest that we can put on and take off the keyboard as it is easier to use it with or without it, personally I think that this decision is a wise one because it adapts to the demands of all users and the use of the keyboard is not forced with or without the piece.
Finally we see a bag with several spare keys and an extractor to remove them and put them in a very easy way.
It is time to focus our eyes on the keyboard, the ThunderX3 TK40 is a fairly compact unit with dimensions of 235 x 450 x 40 mm and a weight of 1, 300 grams, a very considerable figure that makes us think that the keyboard has inside, a steel plate quite generous to improve its rigidity. The keyboard conveys a sensation of a lot of quality and gives us the impression of being one of the best mechanical keyboards on the market, its presence is far from the abundant membrane keyboards.
We are already focusing on its Hybrid-H mechanical push buttons, lately known as Meca-Membrane, which are characterized by combining the great advantages of membranes and mechanical switches. A priori, they should display a feel very similar to a mechanical switcher with quiet, smooth operation like a good-quality membrane keyboard. These pushbuttons combine a frame with an electrostatic capacitive sensor, thus achieving that the touch is very similar to a membrane keyboard but avoids the noisiest part of the mechanism for a much quieter operation.
We started using the keyboard and immediately we realized that its keys are very pleasant to use, we observed that the keys work very smoothly and uniformly, quite similar to a Cherry MX Red switcher for example that offers a very linear operation. Logically it is not exactly the same but it comes much closer than originally thought and its operation is much quieter. After spending some time typing, you get used to these buttons and they are a delight both to write and to play.
We continue with the characteristics of the keyboard itself and we find an ultrapolling of 1000 Hz and the Anti-Ghosting technology with 26 n-Key Rollover (NKRO), this means that the keyboard is capable of detecting the simultaneous pressing of many keys without reaching collapse, thus avoiding a big problem of cheaper keyboards especially when we are playing and we have to do several actions at the same time. We also found a total of 12 multimedia keys to access the most common controls in a very comfortable way, the gaming mode that will prevent us from accidentally pressing the Windows key and a total of 8 additional programmable G keys.
We focus the view at the bottom where we find two folding plastic legs that allow us to slightly lift the keyboard for greater comfort of use if the user sees fit. We also find two small anchors that will serve to join the piece that makes up the palm rest, something that we will do in a very simple way and with little effort. Once the wrist rest is attached and the keyboard rests on our table, it is very firm and stable so it will not move during use.
ThunderX3 TK40 software
The ThunderX3 TK40 keyboard includes advanced management software that we can download from the brand's official website. Once downloaded, we only have to install it in a very simple way since it does not have any complications. Once installed, we open it and first see the possibility of creating up to three different usage profiles to adapt the keyboard to different users or uses.
The ThunderX3 TK40 keyboard features an advanced RGB LED backlight system that we can configure in a total of 16.8 million colors in a very simple way from the software. We can also adjust the lighting in three levels of intensity, breathing effects and color change, of course we can leave it in a fixed color or even turn it off if we wish. The keyboard also allows us to manage the lighting through key combinations to do it in a simpler way and without the need to open the software.
- Fn + LED: Change light effect Fn + REPAG: increase light intensity Fn + AVPAG: decrease light intensity
In addition to controlling the lighting, the software also helps us assign functions to a total of 45 programmable keys, functions so varied that they range from macros to multimedia functions to mouse actions, among many others. A very complete Software without any doubt.
Final words and conclusion
Many of us are users who spend much of the day in front of a computer, whether for work, leisure or study. The most important peripherals, mouse and keyboard, are often the most neglected by regular computer users, many times spending a lot of money on a tower and skimping on something to be used every time you interact in any way with the team.
The ThunderX3 TK40 is a hybrid keyboard that offers us a solution of high performance and the best quality at a very competitive price, much more than purely mechanical keyboards. Let's not forget that it has high quality components and excellent performance, we also highlight 1000 Hz and 26 n-Key Rollover (NKRO) ultrapolling technologies for flawless operation.
To test its performance we have used the usual working environment (office automation, graphic design and video and programming), the performance there is very nice. These Hybrid-H mechanical switches offer very nice operation, are easy to push, reasonably quiet, and their touch doesn't have much to envy mechanical switches. Currently, there is a lot of competition between mechanical keyboards to play . But without a doubt the ThunderX3 TK40 is one of the best on the market and on top of that it does so with an irresistible price.
The ThunderX3 TK40 is for sale for an approximate price of 55 to 60 euros.
