Today we will spend a few minutes of our lives to see how to increase volume in Windows and all the sound options of our system. In addition, we will also see how to customize the audio output of our equipment and we will even manage to exceed the volume limit that we have natively in the system.

Index of contents

Already in the previous Windows 10 April Update, the system implemented a centralized system to control the volume of our equipment. This will allow us to simplify the process of configuring the volume of our system, although some options you follow are a little scattered in general.

That is why they combine giving a review of all the options we have and knowing well where they are located.

Set up sound in Windows 10

The first thing we must locate are the system configuration options. As always we will have several options available, but we will only see one of them to make things easier. This will be through the configuration panel that Windows 10 implements

  • To open the configuration menu we can use the key combination " Windows + I ". We can also do it from the cogwheel button on the start menu Within the main configuration window we will have a first icon with the name " System ", click on him.Inside these copies we must locate the " Sound " section in the left side menu

In this configuration panel we will have different options that should be kept in mind. For this reason, we will see each of them in detail.

Decrease and increase sound volume

First of all, what we will see is how to increase volume in Windows 10. If we look at the sound section, we will clearly see a volume bar. This will be in charge of allowing us to increase the volume of the system.

But not only will it be raised independently as it was before, but if we raise this bar, the volume will also be increased both in the specific software of the device and in the device itself. In other words, if this bar is at 100% we will not be able to further increase the gain from the headset wheel, for example. Note the same in the following image where if we increase the volume on the helmets wheel, it will also increase in the system

Unless, we use music equipment with its own volume control or the volume control of Internet videos such as YouTube. This control goes separately from the system.

If we want to do it in a more direct way, we can also from our desktop. We will only have to go to the right side of the taskbar and identify an icon with the shape of a speaker on it. If we click on this, a volume bar will appear with which we can do these actions.

Increase the volume of specific applications

We can also open another panel of options if we are on the main configuration screen. Here we will look for the option " Device preferences and application volume"

We will access a panel where we will have registered all the sound devices of the system. We can see both the outputs (microphone) and the inputs. And we can also modify the sound volume for different elements:

  • System Sound - This control refers to the system status sounds. It has nothing to do with music, for example. Specific software of the headset: here the sound configuration of the own software of the drivers that we have will be shown. Speech Runtime Executable: This is volume related to the voice of the system and is related to our microphone and Cortana.

In the last positions will be the specific programs that are executed in our system. For example, if we have Chrome or VLC open, its specific volume will appear in this window to be able to configure it to our liking. It should be 100% to avoid that when we execute something it sounds excessively low.

Select audio output devices

The first option we have available is to be able to select the output devices to reproduce the sound. If we click on the drop-down list we will find all the devices in charge of this

In most cases, we will only have in this list the device that corresponds to the sound card integrated in the motherboard, (in our case the Realtek line). But we can also have several devices, for example, if we have an HDMI monitor with speakers, as in our case, it will also be available (ASUS VX239). And if we have a headset as is also our case (Corsair VOID), it will also appear independently, since it will be connected via USB and managed with its own software.

We must also take into account that the device currently connected and in operation will be represented by a green background. If we want to connect another of these devices for the audio output, we will only have to select the one that does not interest.

This can also be done from the system taskbar. If we locate an icon with a speaker on the right side of the bar and click on it, and on the arrow pointing upwards, we will also obtain this list of devices.

Advanced audio output properties

To enter the other properties of the system sound, we will click on the option " Device properties " located just below the list of sound devices.

From here we can activate for example spatial sound, if our device supports Dolby surround sound mode

If we click on " additional device properties " we can access another window in which to configure the device itself, such as its deactivation, volume level or driver update.

Just below the " volume " section we can also enter the selection of sound devices specifically. To do this, click on " Manage sound devices"

In the same way we can configure other properties such as Bluetooth, open the sound control panel, which is nothing more than a different representation of what we have already seen in previous sections.

Test microphone on Windows 10 and other devices

To test the sound of our microphone what we will have to do is go to the " Sound " section of the configuration window. Here we can select our microphone from the drop-down list and also enter its properties through the " Device properties " link

From here we can click on the " Test " button to see the volume while we are talking about it. Thus we will be sure that our microphone receives the signal from our voice if we notice that this bar is moving.

Activate sound equalizer in Windows 10

Windows has a music and video playback application called Groove. Within this we will have different customization options among which we highlight the possibility of customizing the audio output using an equalizer.

To access the program we will open the start menu and write "Groove". It will practically be a version similar to the Windows media player, but with a more consistent system interface.

To access the configuration options, we will have to click once more on the gear icon located at the bottom left of the program.

The second option that appears in this window will be " Play " and within it the " Equalizer " option

We will have customization available according to the different levels of audio frequency. We only have to move each of the buttons to where we want and it will immediately be reflected in the song that we are playing.

We will also have predefined profiles if we click on the drop-down list that appears in the window.

Volume up in Windows 10 more than limit

In addition to all these options, we will also have external applications that will allow us to increase the volume beyond what the system allows, that is, more than 100%. This will be useful if we have a movie or song that is heard excessively little and we need an extra volume.

Be aware of lowering this limit as soon as you play other media files, as you may break the headphones or speakers.

The application that we will use is called Letasoft Sound Booster. This is free and with it we can increase the volume of our system by up to 500%.

Once installed and executed, we can use it from the right side of the Windows taskbar.

Concussion and things to consider

Thanks to the new versions of Windows 10 we will obtain better volume control by having all the controls centralized through the configuration window. Just by selecting our audio input and output devices we can obtain their specific configuration in one click.

Logically we must always keep in mind:

  1. The volume of the system within the configuration window Volume of specific applications such as VBLC or Web browser The volume of the device driver software, which will normally come synchronized with that of the system The volume physically controlled from Hi-Fi equipment

All this information is considered enough to give us a good perspective of how to get the most out of the sound of Windows 10.
