Toshiba's new BG4 series has impressive features. Its new 3D flash memory of up to 96 layers will allow us to have in a single block a capacity of up to 1 TB of solid state storage. In addition, the company will offer a new software controller with which we can improve the performance of these new storage units in terms of reading and access.

The interface of these units is PCIe type 3.0 x4 generation, in NVM Express Revision 1.3b specification, which will offer us a sequential read performance of no less than 2, 250 MB / s and a higher random read performance than all its rivals. with 380, 000 IOPS.

In principle, they are drives geared towards high-performance laptops and IT data centers where high performance is required. But of course we can install it on any PC that has this type of interface available.

As if they were two different worlds, the performance in sequential and random reading of BG4 units is up to 90% higher than the old generation BG3. Also the energy efficiency has been improved by 20% in reading and 7% in writing.

Availability and models

It has not been specifically detailed when these units will reach the retail market, for now we only know that they are available in limited quantities for OEM customers, and that their general launch will be approximately in the second quarter of this 2019.

Regarding the available models, we will have four different capacities: 128 GB, 256 GB, 515 GB and 1 TB, with a profile of only 1.3 mm in height for the three smallest capacity units. The form factor and interface will be either 16 x 20mm surface mount M.2 or 22 x 30mm removable M.2, ideal for Max-Q laptop designs.

We don't know the starting price either, but it's not going to be cheap. So, once again we have to wait, to see the real power of these storage units.
