Toshiba OCZ RC100 is a new SSD that arrives on the market with the intention of becoming the choice of users looking for the best possible balance between price and performance. It is an SSD with an M.2 2242 form factor, which makes it an extremely compact solution. On its PCB are mounted the 3D NAND TLC BiCS memory chips and a controller compatible with the NVMe protocol.

Ready to see our in-depth review? Will it pass all performance tests? Here we go!

First of all, we thank Toshiba for the trust placed in ceding the product to us for analysis.

Toshiba OCZ RC100 technical features

Unboxing and design

Toshiba has opted for a simple presentation for it with the aim of reducing costs to the maximum. We see an image of the product on its cover, the model and the capacity of the chosen model. In our case it is the 240 GB.

While on the back we have the main characteristics of the product in different languages and the serial number.

The SSD comes to us inside a cardboard box and perfectly protected by a plastic blister, next to it we find the documentation and the warranty. It is a simple presentation, but it fulfills its function perfectly and guarantees good protection of the product until it reaches the hands of the end user.

Toshiba OCZ RC100 is the new NVMe SSD storage unit that is based on M.2 2242 form factor, which means its dimensions are 22mm wide and 42mm long, being noticeably shorter than M. 2, 242 that reach 80 mm in length. This makes it compatible with a large number of Mini PCs and business laptops, which only support this form of storage. Of course it is still compatible with all motherboards on the market that offer an M.2 slot.

Its PCB is quite simple, with all the components mounted on a single face. The manufacturer has mounted a controller compatible with the NVMe protocol to achieve great performance, Toshiba promises superior performance than SATA disks with a price only 10-15% higher. To keep the cost low, a PCI-Express 3.0 x2 interface has been chosen, cheaper to implement than its x4 version that we find in high-performance NVMe SSDs.

As for the memories, they are chips based on the 64-layer memory technology BiCS Flash TLC of the Japanese firm, these are the most advanced 3D chips on the market, allowing great performance as well as good durability and a Lower manufacturing cost than with planar memory or 3D MLC chips. Toshiba promises that it is capable of offering sequential transfer rates of up to 1, 620 MB / s in read and up to 1, 130 MB / s in write. As for 4K random access performance , it reaches 160, 000 IOPS in reading and 120, 000 IOPS in writing.

Toshiba has leveraged its expertise in NAND flash memory to design a complete SSD that fits a single BGA package, delivering an NVMe disk that balances cost and performance like no other. All of this has resulted in an extremely energy efficient unit, consuming almost half the power of NVMe enthusiast units, giving you a longer battery life for your laptop. Its maximum power consumption is 3.2W in writing operations.

Of course, it is compatible with TRIM and an algorithm of garbage collection in idle time, two characteristics that allow to maintain a very high performance in a sustained way with the time of use.

Toshiba OCZ RC100 is offered in capacities of 120 GB, 240 GB and 480 GB to adjust to the needs and possibilities of all users. As we have already mentioned, we have the 240 GB version , which will surely be the most popular among users.. All of them have a 3-year warranty, a sign of the confidence that the manufacturer has in their product. It has the TÜV-Bauart, BSMI, RCM, CE, UL & cUL (CSA), China RoHS, KC, FCC, ISED, VCCI, WEEE and PCI Express certificates.

The resistance of this SSD reaches 60 TB in the 120 GB model, 120 TB in the 240 GB model and 240 TB in the 480 GB model. This guarantees that you can write 55 GB, 110 GB and 219 GB of data per day, respectively, during the three-year warranty.

software

As Toshiba is linked with OCZ we can use the OCZ SSD Utility software to track and maintain our unit. We find four main sections:

  • Summary: Quick summary of free, busy capacity, if the health of the SSD is good, if there is a new firmware to update and the unit temperature sensor. Tuner: A pretty bad translation, but it refers to a test performance. To check if the sequential, random read / write and latency of the RC100 is what Toshiba promises us. Maintenance: It allows us to update our SSD quickly from a pendrive or from the web page. Settings: Less relevant options but they are quite useful. Supervision, application language, registration and notifications are the most interesting.

Final words and conclusion about Toshiba OCZ RC100

Toshiba offers us one of the best NVME 2242 SSDs currently on the market. The Toshiba OCZ RC100 has different sizes, a quality controller, TLC memories and a great performance given its size.

In our tests we have been able to verify that it offers the 1600 MB / s in reading and the 1050 MB / s of writing that it promises for this model. An important detail is found on its temperature with 56ºC at rest and 71ºC at maximum power. If we dare to add a small passive heatsink, we will be able to lower the temperatures considerably.

We recommend reading the best SSDs on the market

Its price in Spain is 59 euros for the 120 GB model and 80 euros for the 240 GB model (the one we have analyzed). We find it a great SSD and 100% recommended. Good work Toshiba!
