While Microsoft no longer supports those operating systems that were in great use in the early 2000s, support for older hardware is not something we have to worry about if we run Linux on these computers. Sure, there will be driver issues from time to time, and we may have to do a few things by hand, but if you're using legacy hardware like the legendary Toshiba T4900CT, they'll want a Linux distribution of some sort.

Install the AOSC OS Linux distribution on the Toshiba T4900CT

A user in the Linux community has managed to grab one of the first laptops, the Toshiba T4900CT, and install Linux on it. The user MingcongBai has been able to install a simplified version of the AOSC OS Linux distribution on this laptop. The distribution is known for its streamlined user interface, and is in particular running a command line-only "Retro" version. At startup (lasting more than two minutes), the user can see the hardware and software specifications: Linux kernel 4.19.67 (released last year) on an Intel 75 MHz processor.

The Toshiba T4900CT was a laptop with a 75MHz Intel Pentium P54C processor and took up 8MB of RAM and a 1MB graphics card. The TFT screen was 10.4 inches and offered an incredible 640x480 resolution. Hard drive capacity depended on a 772 MB IBM HDD. The battery life was only about 2 hours.

Getting old equipment to work, even if software is available, is challenging, and it stands out for the historical importance of this laptop, one of the first of the time back in 1994.
