TSMC thus joins Globalfoundries in the intention of making the jump to 7 nm for next year, it is expected that both companies will use EUV technology to be able to make a new leap forward towards the limit of silicon. Globalfoundries will be in charge of manufacturing AMD's new Zen 2 processors and Navi GPUs using its 7nm process.

Currently TSMC is already manufacturing products with its 10nm process, although it is not yet mature enough to be used in the production of very complex designs such as Nvidia's GPUs, therefore its use is limited to simpler designs such as processors. for smartphones and tablets among other things. In recent years, the competition has been putting a lot of pressure on a TSMC that no longer dominates with an iron fist as in the past, so it is time to get your batteries.

With this, the company has accelerated the development of its process to 7 nm to have it ready as soon as possible, initially using DUV technology and then making the leap to the EUV as the process matures. EUV is capable of producing higher quality chips, but the necessary equipment requires much more demanding conditions, which requires maturation in the manufacturing process that can take a couple of years. Globalfoundries will also start the DUV with its 7nm manufacturing process.
