8K televisions are nothing new. There have been a lot of them hitting the market for over a year. However, actual consumer adoption is still a long way off. There is a very small amount of 8K content, and even then, there aren't really any consumer TV shows or movies in this format yet. However, the market has to start at some point, like the 4K, HD and other formats that already existed at the beginning.

8K TVs will have their own standard and logo from 2020

The Consumer Technology Association released the official definitions of what an 8K television is. Of course, as expected, the resolution has to be at least 7680 x 4320. That's the same as 4 times more resolution than a consumer 4K TV. In short, it is a massive update.

The panels also have to support 24, 30 and 60 images per second. That's a minimum, they could also support other frame rates, but at least those three are a priority. Other key features are 10-bit color and HDR features, in addition to HDCP 2.2.

It will be effective from January 1, 2020

Well, ironically, almost all 8K displays on the market now meet the "new" standards. It is rather a formality at the moment. However, the devices will be able to use the 8K logo from January 1, 2020, just before we see the new televisions at CES 2020. We will keep you up to date with all the news.
