Uber and cabify announce their departure from Barcelona

Just yesterday, the Generalitat approved the decree law that would regulate the VTC sector in the city of Barcelona. The reaction of these companies was not long in coming. As expected, both Uber and Cabify have announced with minutes of difference that they stopped working in the city of Barcelona. It was something they had threatened if the decree was passed, something that has already happened.

Due to the same, the rules have been tightened so that these companies could operate in the city. So that the fifteen minutes of prior reservation, would become one hour, among other measures.

Uber's decision was something that was expected to happen once the decree has been approved. For this reason, the company itself has issued a statement on its website, in which they say goodbye to Barcelona. Although it is not ruled out that they will return in the future. But at the moment, with said decree they will not act. Cabify, which announced an ERE of 1, 000 employees this week, is also leaving town.

Undoubtedly, they are predictable decisions, but they reveal the tensions that have been taking place in the Catalan city in recent weeks. In the case of Uber, it assumes that the 2, 000 licenses are worthless, therefore 2, 000 drivers in total.

We will see how the situation in Madrid evolves now, where taxi drivers continue with various strikes. Since at the moment there are still no agreements. But the situation in Barcelona may end up repeating itself in the Spanish capital.
