Ubuntu 16.04 project leader Martin Wimpress today announced the general availability of the Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system.
Having been in development for the past six months, Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS debuted today as part of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS operating system for PCs and for Raspberry Pi 2 and 3 motherboards. This is the first version with long-term support of Ubuntu MATE, and you will receive updates and security patches for 3 years.
Main new features of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Among the main functions of Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS we can highlight the presence of the MATE 1.12.1 desktop environment with multi-touch support and natural scrolling for touchpads, as well as improved support for multi-monitor configurations and improved session management.
Among other things, the new MATE 16.04 LTS integrates extended support for systemd, a new tool that now features equipment vendor and model information, and a completely redesigned welcome screen.

Also, the new operating system offers users access to Ubuntu MATE Software Boutique, which allows installing more than 150 applications with a single mouse click, and brings documentation with installation information for all newbies, along with a wizard for the operating system configuration after installation.
Another great new feature of Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS is the updated MATE Tweak tool, which received new capabilities, such as the ability to adjust the Mutiny panel to give the desktop a look similar to the Unity interface, as well as a new option that allows users activate keyboard LEDs on modern laptops and wireless keyboards.
Finally it brings support for the playback of DVDs and Blu-ray, as well as for running on single-board computers Raspberry Pi 2 and Raspberry Pi 3 as we already discussed on the web.

One of the lightest, configurable and stable versions of this fantastic operating system. A different flavor and a new life for a limited PC. Minimum requirements: 700 MHZ processor, 512 MB of RAM and 7 GB of hard disk.

Ubuntu GNOME 16.04
This version is one of the most widespread thanks to its GNOME desktop. Above all, it is ideal for users seeking a highly customizable, modern desktop experience.
