What is new in Ubuntu 17.04?

Ubuntu 17.04 desktop

Unity 7

To begin with, Ubuntu 17.04 is probably the latest version of the operating system to have the default Unity 7 desktop environment. Starting in 2018, Ubuntu will switch to GNOME for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

Swap files

New installations of Ubuntu 17.04 will no longer require a SWAP partition, instead SWAP files will be used by default to save more RAM.

Linux Kernel 4.10

Ubuntu 17.04 includes the Linux kernel 4.10, especially good for all users with AMD Ryzen or Intel Kaby Lake based systems. Gamers will also appreciate the inclusion of Mesa 17.0.2 and the X.Org Server 1.19.2 graphics server.

Ubuntu 17.04 Default Apps

Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) comes with many updated applications, except for the Terminal emulator (which is maintained in version 3.20), the Nautilus file manager (3.20) and Ubuntu Software (version 3.22).

For the rest, these are the applications that you will find in the operating system:

  • Firefox 52 Thunderbird 45 LibreOffice 5.3 Nautilus 3.20.4 Rhythmbox 3.4.1

Other changes

Among other changes, Ubuntu 17.04 also comes with new default wallpapers, while the DNS resolver is now systemd-resolved. Also, gconf is no longer installed by default as it has been replaced by gsettings.
