Ubuntu Mate 16.04 available for Raspberry Pi 3
This image is fully functional and based on the ubuntu armhf base and not the new Snappy Core. Which means that the applications will have to install it from the apt-get command. You lied that project leader Martin Wimpress commented:
Ubuntu Mate 16.04 lts has not been in development for 6 months but has been in development for about 2 years. Since the project started in June 2014 in this version, this is the first LTS to become official and it has cost so much work. This is the goal that you have firmly set and brought to light step by step. I extend my sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed in these 22 months. Nothing would have been possible without the contributions of the amazing Ubuntu Mate community. We couldn't thank all those who have been helping to create it so much. I hope this release makes you all proud.
It is not yet active but they warn that it is recommended to use a class 10 microSD card and a minimum of 4GB since there is quite a bottleneck for reading / writing the card. Among the applications that have tried the most popular LibreOffice is one of them.
Another important fact is that in the image there is no user defined by default and while the installation is done, the wizard will ask for your own user account, password and regional parameters. They also indicate that the startup is quite slow, but once all the services have been activated, the equipment works at high speed. This we understand will be fixed little by little.
Where can I download the ISO image? From this one on the official website (click to go to the image, it is not yet available but it will be soon)… What do you think of this initiative? To us it seems amazing to have a functional PC for just 45 euros. Incredible!
