JEDEC, the organization responsible for setting the standards for the storage used in most smartphones, has released a new universal flash storage specification, UFS 3.1.

UFS 3.1 adds performance improvements for storage on smartphones and cards

In summary, UFS 3.1 should bring faster performance to smartphones and removable storage cards, while reducing power consumption.

Among other things, this is because the UFS 3.1 standard includes:

  • Write Booster: Uses a non-volatile SLC cache to improve write speed Deep Sleep: New low power state Performance Throttling Notification: Alerts the host device when high temperatures affect performance. Host Performance Booster: Optional cache function to improve the Performance on higher density UFS devices for faster cache / read performance.

The theoretical maximum data transfer rate for UFS 3.1 is 23.2 Gbps, the same as version 3.0. However, new features should help improve 'real-world' performance in many situations, while allowing longer battery life on mobile devices.

These features are commonly found in solid state drives such as those typically used in PCs and servers. If added to the UFS standard, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets could be more in line with these products.
