Loaded with Hadoken and bumps, finally comes the first of several Capcom bets on Nintendo Switch. To ensure success on the console, Capcom begins with a new iteration of its classic IP arcade: ULTRA STREET FIGHTER II: The Final Challengers (we promise not to overuse capitals in the next few paragraphs). We already sensed that classic and 2D video games would find their perfect platform on Nintendo Switch, and Street Fighter is proof of this.

Let's not let the Monster Hunter XX announcement for the Switch take away the limelight and let's see what this game brings us for Nintendo Switch.

We thank Nintendo for the transfer of the key to test the game:

ULTRA STREET FIGHTER II: The Final Challengers - Review in Spanish

A classic, with an extra mode

This version of Street Fighter II seeks to give us an experience very close to the original Arcade. The graphics, characters, game modes and gameplay have been taken from Street Fighter II and updated to the Nintendo Switch but not modernized. That is, we are not facing a Street Fighter V with current 3D graphics and new mechanics but with a title very close to the original experience.

Well, for the most part. In addition to adding the ability to roast us in online battles and customize fighters' clothing, Capcom has taken the opportunity to experiment with Nintendo Switch motion controls and portability, opening up a multitude of new game modes for developers.

The gameplay remains as the original, but since the Joy-con D-pad remains in an awkward position, the stick remains in the natural position of the thumb. Those who have played before and are used to using only the buttons will hate this and appreciate (between curses) playing with the Pro controller, which feels great in Ultra Street Fighter II. Personally, I was not used to the game and it is easier for me to perform movements with the joystick.

Graphics and sound

This version of Street Fighter II remains Arcade and therefore knows what its greatest charm is: the classic graphics and sound. Therefore, it gives us the option of choosing whether we want to play with the renewed or original audio tracks, with the characteristic nuances. The same happens with the models of the characters and the backgrounds, which we can enjoy in their original resolutions or in raised resolution, adapted to the screen we are playing.

All this to distribute firewood as it used to be done, with the charm of an arm 10 pixels long.

The way of Hado - line up, there are no cakes for everyone at once

The new game mode consists of a first person view repelling waves of enemies with the Joy-con as our fists. This game mode does have progression, since with the score we obtain we are improving different aspects of our player.

For now, it is a fun game mode but with little variety and in which the controls are not too fine-tuned. For one thing, the three difficulty levels only add more enemies and a boss ending when finishing hard mode. In the field of gameplay, the game detects Joy-con well but the movement window for it to accept that we make one of the five movements is so fair that many times we try to make a movement, it accepts us as the one that is not four times, and finally we get the one we try.

Luckily the Hado Path incorporates a training mode where it instructs us in the movements and we see precisely what we do well and badly when trying to perform them. After a few minutes in training mode, the Hado Path becomes much more accessible and just what we try to do, although we move artificially rather than naturally through that window of movement so narrow.

Despite the lack of content in this game mode and the controls that need revision, when you get the hang of the game it is quite fun. It seems to us that if Capcom dedicates effort and in several updates expands and fixes it, the Path of Hado is an incentive to buy the game.

Duo training and combat

If it happens to you like me, that the little that I had previously played a Street Fighter was the equivalent of sitting on top of the command and seeing what happens, the duo and training modes will be like a finger ring.

In training mode we can quietly practice the movements to start knowing what we are doing instead of hitting the buttons. But it is not only for noobs (novices): we can activate the attack information and thus we know the damage and other values that we are infringing on the opponent, as well as the movements we make at each moment (and why we do not get the special movement).

In duo mode we can join a partner and toast the CPU together. This mode is more aimed at games with friends and having a laugh, not everything is fighting! (among us).

Conclusion and final words about Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers

As you have read in our analysis we have been very happy with the Ultra Street Fighter II game. Both its arcade game mode and the Path of Hado have had a great time. Without a doubt it is one of the greatest classics we can play.

If that is true, it costs us a little more to adapt to the controls and their movements with the Nintendo Switch. But when we have several games we adapt little by little.

We recommend reading our review of the Nintendo Switch in Spanish

Currently we can find it in online stores for a starting price of 39.90 euros, for example in the official Nintendo store it is already available.

In short, we believe that Capcom has started the game of Poker on Nintendo Switch with a safe bet, and it makes a face of having a very interesting deck prepared. In the meantime, we can only enjoy this adaptation of Street Fighter II until we have more Monster Hunter news for the Switch!
