Gmail is the most used email service in the world, both by users and by companies. So millions of messages are sent every day using this service. Despite the fact that in general it is a very safe option, from time to time security flaws arise. Something that has happened in this case. Since a flaw has been discovered that could leave any Gmail user without service.

A failure in Gmail can leave any user without service

The security company We Are Segmented has disclosed this vulnerability detected in the Gmail servers. This flaw in the servers allows an attacker to send an email designed as a "Zalgo" text. The victim who receives it could be left without access to the email.

Gmail security flaw

A Zalgo text is a type of text that consists of Unicode characters (letters, symbols, numbers…) that extends from top to bottom, right and left, mixing with the original text. The researcher himself who has discovered this flaw has tested the effects of this type of text. This type of text consists of more than 1 million characters. When injected into a website, the browser is completely blocked and is unusable.

When sending this type of text by Gmail, it was found that it was impossible to log in. You were getting an Error 500 message, which is an internal server error. The company itself contacted Google to report this problem. They are currently working on an update to solve it.

It is currently unknown whether this bug has been exploited by hackers. We hope that this was not the case, but we must bear in mind that it is likely. Also, it seems that if we send this type of message, the browser does not crash anymore. But, better avoid doing it until Google confirms that an update is already available.
