In the pre-ATI / Nvidia era, the world of 3D accelerator graphics cards was dominated by 3DFX and its iconic Voodoo series, but in the late 1990s that popularity fell very quickly.
Eight legendary 3DFX Voodoo 2 graphics cards in SLI to play Half-Life
Nvidia acquired the manufacturer of GPUs in late 2000 to access the company's IP. In fact, 3DFX is where Nvidia got the term SLI, a feature that was originally part of the Voodoo series graphics cards. It is surprising that Nvidia continues to market multi-GPU support as SLI, changing the name from "Scan-Line Interleave" to "Scalable Link Interface" when they re-introduced the name in 2004.
What we have today is a PC built by Ross Tregemba, who has combined eight legendary Voodoo 2 graphics cards in SLI to play Half-Life, using Quantum3D Obsidian 2 200SBi hardware, a motherboard contains two Voodoo 2 chipsets.
Tregemba was able to run Half-Life with a fairly acceptable frame rate. Tragemba commented that two of these old graphics cards required extensive repairs before they worked properly, as they were intensively used in "military simulation" tasks in their previous lives.
In the 3DFX era, a system with so many Voodoo 2 graphics cards would have been unheard of. "Having something like that was something you only thought about in dreams…" Tragemba said in a recent message on the HardOCP forum, where he shared this kind of feat.
