We all have in our minds the announcement of SteamOS and the Steam Machines around the year 2013, a Linux-based operating system oriented to video games and the consoles governed by it. The months and years went by and the future was increasingly black, to the point that what many saw long announcing has finally arrived: SteamOS and Steam Machines are Valve's biggest failure.

Valve to refocus on Steam

Valve is known worldwide for Steam, the PC gaming platform that forever changed this market sector. Thousands of games at very competitive prices and available to everyone, Valve makes a lot of money with Steam but wanted to go a step further by delving into the hardware. This attempt at diversification by Valve has led the company to not release any new games since Left 4 Dead 2 appeared in 2010.

The reception of SteamOS was very lukewarm, its mission was to fight with a colossus like Windows, master and lord of PC gaming, and this is not an easy task. SteamOS is still a Linux operating system and the AAA games catalog for this platform was and is very small, little by little they have been bequeathing new titles such as Mad Max, Dirt Showdown, The Witcher 2 and some more but the catalog is still immensely small.

Valve has invested a lot of money in software development such as OpenGL and Vulkan to make it easier for developers to port the games to Linux and therefore SteamOS, thus reducing dependence on DirextX and Microsoft, despite this the developers still have not decided on Bet on Valve solutions and continue with DirectX and Windows as a reference. To this has been added the low interest of manufacturers for Steam Machines with what we already have the whiting that bites its tail.

Half-Life receives a patch 19 years after its release

So Valve has decided to shelve the hardware and focus on what has made it great, the software. With this they intend to get rid of all the projects that do not generate benefits and the first to fall apart from SteamOS and the Steam Machines would be Steam Controller and Steam Link.

It would not be surprising that we will soon have an official statement from Valve to clarify the issue.
