SteamOS was a great project by Valve to make video games less dependent on Windows, it is a Linux-based and video game-oriented operating system. Its perfect complement was Steam Machines, a new concept of video game consoles that has ended up being one of the biggest failures in the industry.

Despite this, it is undeniable that the company is still a great value of Open Source, having released Vulkan versions of several of its games and working to bring Vulkan to iOS / MacOS thanks to the contribution to the creation of MoltenVK.
SteamOS and Steam Machines may not have been a failure after all, since since their announcement we have seen a greater number of games ported to the penguin operating system, even though it still cannot even shade the almighty Windows. Two of the most notable examples have been Aspyr Media and Feral Interactive, bearers of most of the AAA titles that have made it to Linux.
