Portable VirtualBox

Portable VirtualBox is also an open source application that will allow us to convert our virtualization application to portable. With it we can have our virtualization application in a portable storage unit, like a USB. In addition, we can move our virtual machines to this USB so that we can run them from this location on any other computer. Or if we prefer we can create them directly here.

This makes VirtualBox acquire this useful feature that will allow us to move to any computer with our machines and be able to execute them.

The only negative aspect so to speak is that we can only run VirtualBox portable on Windows host operating systems. Although on the other hand we can perfectly virtualize any type of machine that supports VirtualBox.

Next, we are going to see how to make VirtualBox portable.

Make VirtualBox portable

Well, the first thing we will have to do is download the Portable VirtualBox application to start the process. For this, we must go to their website www.vbox.me and we will directly obtain a link on the first line of the website. Let's start the process:

  • We must move the file that we have downloaded to the portable storage unit Once inside, run the tool from this unit We will have to extract the files after their first execution. In which case we click on “ Extract

  • Now let's go into the new folder created and run " Portable-VirtualBox ". We can select our language for the interface.

  • Once in the main window, we can directly download the VirtualBox installation files or select the path where we have it installed so that the program makes it portable.

In the version of Portable VirtualBox used, when running this program with VirtualBox installed on the computer, VirtualBox directly ran and did not allow the program to be managed portability. We recommend running this program with VirtualBox uninstalled from our system

  • We choose “ download VirtualBox installation files ” Also, we will have to select if the system is going to be 64 or 32 bits

  • Once the file is downloaded, click on " Accept " to start the file extraction process. Once the process is finished, we can run VirtualBox from our USB. To do this we use the Portable VirtualBox itself as launched.

  • Now double-clicking on it, the virtualization application will start. We will have VirtualBox portable.

Create a virtual machine with Portable VirtualBox

The procedure will be exactly the same as the one we use as creating virtual machines with the installable program.

If we click on the " New " button we will start creating the virtual machine. We can choose exactly the same machines as in the main program, Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.

The only limitation we will have is the storage space of our portable device. Logically, to host the installation of a virtual machine like Windows, we will need at least 15 GB of space.

We will have to pay attention to the directory where our virtual machine will be stored. We must choose USB if what we want is to make our machines portable.

As we can see the customization elements of the virtual machine will be exactly the same as in the main VirtualBox application.

If we already have virtual machines created on our computer, we will only have to move them to this unit and open them with the program.

As you can see, we can make VirtualBox portable with this simple application. In this way we can run virtual machines where we want.
