Western Digital has introduced a new WD Purple drive for 14TB security cameras, accompanied by a 512GB microSD card, from the same Purple line.

WD Purple adds a 14 TB hard drive and a Purple SC QD101 card

WD Purple is Western Digital's line of security or surveillance cameras that is receiving a new 14TB hard drive with helium technology to improve durability. It appears to be basically the same 12TB drive that was announced last year, but with an extra platter, as the weight has risen from 1.46 / 0.66lb / kg for that drive to 1.52 / 0 69 lb / kg for the 14 TB drive. We believe it has nine dishes, although WD has not confirmed this.

The buffer size has doubled to 512MB and the sustained streaming bandwidth has increased from 245MB / sec to 255MB / sec. There is no increase in the number of cameras supported - 64 - and the three-year limited warranty remains in effect.

WD also took the opportunity to announce a Purple SC QD101 microSD card, called the Ultra Endurance product. The capacity ranges from 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. It uses 96-layer 3D NAND and, we assume, TLC flash technology. This new card is released after the Purple QD312 model and the QD101 looks like it will naturally replace them. Western Digital did not reveal what the TBW number is, which in the QD312 was 768TBW for the 256GB model.

The 14 TB WD Purple hard drive is now available from some WD dealers. The Purple SC QD101 microSD card is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2020.
