The company's Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC550 18TB and 20TB Ultrastar DC HC650 SMR hard drives are designed to provide hyperscale data centers with more hard drive capacity around exabytes.

Western Digital drives up to 20TB will arrive in 2020

Western Digital said it will test its 18TB and 20TB capacity hard drives by the end of the year as it targets data center customers in the first half of 2020.

Although flash storage has been gaining popularity among traditional drives, there are many use cases for hard drives, precisely because they currently have more storage capacity. Western Digital said it is combining its nine-deck mechanical platform and power-assisted recording to meet the requirements of customer data centers like Dropbox.

Western Digital introduced the 20TB Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) in June. The storage giant is betting that SMR drives will account for half of its hard drive exabytes shipped by 2023. SMR drives are expected to offer cost savings compared to traditional Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) drives. For the past year, Western Digital has been working to make SMR performance equal to that of PMR units.

The drives being tested will join Western Digital's portfolio of hard drives, ranging from 10TB, 14TB, 18TB and 20TB drives in various configurations. These hard drives and capacities come in six, eight and nine deck platters.
