Western Digital Red and Red Pro available as models up to 12TB

One of the major hard drive manufacturers is increasing the maximum capacity of its 12 TB hard drives in the WD Red and WD Red Pro range.

The hard drive uses, unsurprisingly, uses SATA 3.0 (6 Gbps) model "WD120 EFAX" and "WD Red" and would serve medium-sized NAS servers quite well. 1 to 8 TB rotate at 5, 400 RPM with advertised transfer rates of 196 MB / sec, cache capacity is 256 MB at 5, 400 RPM. The 12TB “WD121 KFBX” model specification from “WD Red Pro” improves transfer rates to 240MB / sec with 256MB cache capacity. This model of WD Red Pro rotates at a speed of 7200 RPM. The transfer speed would be half that of a SATA SSD.

Although hard drives are slowly being replaced by hard drives on the mass market, they still have several advantages. One is durability, with units that can easily last over 10 years without worrying about statistics like TBW. Also, hard drives are still cheaper when it comes to high capacities (4TB up).

Western Digital's new 12TB hard drive is now available on the European market at a price starting at 500 euros.
