Western Digital has revealed the creation of its new 128-layer BiCS-5 3D NAND TLC memories and the first products with this technology are expected to begin appearing in late 2020.

Western Digital's 128-layer 3D NAND memories will kick off in late 2020

Western Digital was created in collaboration with Sandisk, which is now owned by Western Digital, and Toshiba, an initiative that enabled both companies to develop high-speed, high-capacity 3D flash technology. To put it simply, more layers in this type of NAND flash memory adds more capacity per array, similar to how increasing the number of floors in a building would result in more rooms or space.

Previously, Western Digital's BiCS NAND memories could offer a total of 96 layers, with the move to 128 layers, resulting in 33% more storage per chip.

By decreasing the use of the array area and offering greater amounts of 3D memory, Western Digital allows its memory division to offer greater storage capacity, allowing them to reduce the cost / GB of their future memory chips. This means that we will see higher capacity SSD drives by Western Digital in the near future keeping the same price.

According to sources, the first Western Digital 128-layer 3D NAND SSDs will start appearing in late 2020. WD SSDs are usually very inexpensive and offer good performance, so this is very good news as we begin to 'retire' traditional hard drives.
