In the market we can find a multitude of multimedia centers and Mini PCs with the Android operating system, among all the variety we can always find one that stands out for a peculiar feature. This is the case of Wetek Play 2, a complete multimedia center with Android that also offers us a DTT and satellite tuner to give us many hours of entertainment and fun on a single device.

First of all, we thank Wetek for the trust they placed in giving us Play 2 for their analysis.

Wetek Play 2: technical characteristics

Wetek Play 2: unboxing and analysis

The Wetek Play 2 comes to us in a cardboard box of quite compact size and in which the colors black and dark blue predominate. The box has a sliding cover that we must remove in order to open it and access the product. On the front we find the brand logo along with a great image of the device and its main features: HDMI, Dolby, Bluetooth and dts. In the back we find detailed information about its main characteristics and specifications but only in English.

We open the box and we find all the elements very well protected by pieces of foam for a perfect accommodation and that they do not move until they reach the hands of the end user. We find the following bundle:

  • Wetek Play 2.IR remote control. 12V 1.5A power supply. Different format plugs. HDMI cable. Cable for RS-232 port.

External appearance

We already focus our attention on the Wetek Play 2 and we see a device that has a very clean and minimalist design. It is a black casing in which the brand logo stands out on the top along with a power button and a blue status light for power on and red for power off on the left side of the front. Right next to it we see two LEDs that tell us if the WiFi or the Ethernet port are working.

On the right side we appreciate a USB 2.0 port that we can access in a quite comfortable way to connect a storage unit and a slot for MicroSD memory cards. We also see some vents.

At the back is where most of the Wetek Play 2 ports are located, we find an input and an output DVB-S2 connector, two USB 2.0 ports, one AV output, one Gigabit Ethernet network port, one HDMI port 2.0a, an optical audio output, an RS-232 connector and the DC connector for the power supply.

The bottom is riddled with ventilation slots to help keep the internal components cooler, remember that the cooling is totally passive. We also see a small button that gives us access to the Android recovery.

To start the Wetek Play 2 we just have to connect it to a screen by HDMI and connect the power supply, the device turns on automatically and in a few seconds we see the Wetek logo on the screen. It takes approximately 20 seconds for the system to start.

Operating system interface and features

Once it has finished starting we find an assistant very similar to that of Android phones and tablets, we must choose the language and connect to a WiFi or Ethernet network to be able to use all its functions. From the first moment it is noticeable that we are dealing with a ROM customized by Wetek and that has been thought to be used with the remote control, of course we can connect a keyboard and a mouse and use it as a more traditional Mini PC.

The main interface shows a tile-based design, it is a solution that looks simple but tremendously effective when we are in front of a device that we will mainly use with the remote control, navigation becomes very agile. The tiles represent the different applications that we have installed, but also the videos and files that we have seen more recently.

By pressing the menu key on the controller we access the launcher settings, the most remarkable thing is that we can make an application load at the start of the device, in this way we can have, for example, KODI on the screen as soon as the Wetek Play 2 starts, something which will be very practical for many users.

In Wetek Play 2 we can find the classic Amlogic settings, icons very similar to those seen on other Mini PC devices. The device also offers us the classic settings of its Android 5.1 operating system, a great success for users who are more used to being formed, which also offers us many more options. From here we can put the language in Spanish so that all the applications we install are shown in the language of Cervantes.

Wetek Play 2 includes the OTA update distribution system through the manufacturer's WE.update application. With this service we can update the device both directly over the Internet and from a local file that we will have downloaded with another PC. Wetek provides us with a manual on its official website and in the forums we can find different custom ROMs, even with Ubuntu.

The Wetek Play 2 features an AMLogic S905-H processor consisting of four 64-bit Cortex-A53 cores and a Mali-450MP5 GPU. The processor is accompanied by 2GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. Storage seems to us the weakest point of the device since we only have a little more than 4 GB free, which seems very scarce and will make the use of a memory card mandatory. Fortunately the storage is not partitioned so we can make the most of the free space.

It may seem like a very modest processor but the truth is that it includes 10-bit s H.265 hardware decoding so it can easily handle 4K videos at a speed of 60 FPS along with its HDMI 2.0a connector, remember that it is a device focused on this type of use and not on games, although of course we can play many games on Google Play quite smoothly. It also has official DD and DTS audio licenses so we will not have problems with this content. Without a doubt a very successful processor for a device like this.

The Wetek Play 2 does not have root with its serial firmware, something that will not be a big problem since it does not include many applications installed as standard, anyway the most expert users will surely find a way to root it over the network.

In addition to Google Play, we have an alternative store, Aptoide, from which we can download a multitude of applications, including KODI.

The Wetek Play 2 includes an application for DLNA and Airplay which in this case is called MediaCenter. Thanks to this we can access all our multimedia content from an Android and iPhone terminal using applications such as BubbleUPnP. By cons does not have Miracast. The Net Mounter application helps us to mount control points on our local network so that we can access Wetek Play 2 through these points.

We also highlight the VNC server that will serve to control our Wetek device remotely from a smartphone or tablet on the same WiFi network. To do this we will use the AMLogic control app application. The only requirement is that both devices are on the same WiFi network and enable the remote control option in the settings of the Wetek Play 2. Now we only have to use a VNC client or even a browser and enter the IP and port 5900 without a password.

WeTV application: DTT and Satellite television

As we have mentioned one of the differentiating points of the Wetek Play 2 is the inclusion of a DTT and satellite tuner, with this we can have access to a multitude of television channels in a very comfortable and practical way. In this sense it works like the DTT tuners that we have all used at some time, we have to connect the antenna cable to the Wetek Play 2, start the WeTV television application and start searching for channels. An assistant will ask us if we want to scan by antenna or by cable and from which country we want to scan the channels. Really a very simple procedure and that does not have any complication. We point out that the manufacturer makes a complete application manual available to us.

An automatic scan will start that will not have problems to find all the channels available in our region, if we do not see those that should have done something we have done wrong.

WE RECOMMEND YOU Asus ROG Cetra Review in Spanish (Complete analysis)

The WeTV application offers us all the possibilities that we find in a modern television and even some additional ones, thanks to the remote control we will be able to perfectly handle all its functions, some of the most notable are:

  • Right arrow: access the channel list Left arrow: access the favorite channel list Up / down arrow: change channels Menu button (wipes): WeTV application settings Options button (four dots): access the extra channel menu Green button: menu of subtitles Yellow button: select audio track Blue button: EPG access REC button: start live recording

Within the WeTV app we can manage our favorite channels, access the EPG system, schedule recordings or change the audio and subtitles of the broadcast of the selected channel. From the remote control we have several shortcuts that are interesting to know and that we can consult in the WeTV manual that we find on the brand's website.

It also offers us the possibility of managing channels (default password is 0000), from here we can reorder, delete, restrict, save or retrieve channel lists, import and export the satellite list.

In the PVR menu we will manage everything related to recording live programs or through the Timeshift function included in the software. We can save the recordings in the internal memory or in an external medium, better the second given the limited storage capacity of the Wetek Play 2.

Finally in the system settings we can configure the default audio options, subtitles and teletext characters.

Final words and conclusion about Wetek Play 2

After spending several days using the Wetek Play 2, we can now make an assessment of what the device can offer us. First of all we highlight that it is based on a simple but robust and high quality design, the manufacturer has opted for a minimalist and very fine solution that will not clash anywhere we place it.

Secondly, we highlight its operating system, Android 5.1 with a layer of manufacturer customization to adapt it to the use of the remote control. The system has been tremendously stable and the performance has been excellent, everything runs smoothly without jerks or lags. In this aspect, the Wetek guys have done a really good job, we also have their update service via OTA for great comfort when it comes to always having the latest.

We are already going to assess the benefits of the Wetek Play 2 and it is undoubtedly one of the best multimedia centers that we can find on the market, apart from a practical Mini PC that makes us the functions of television by DTT and satellite, we can also record all our favorite programs on external media, either live or with the Timeshift programming function.

As a main negative point we highlight the low storage capacity of the system, something that is not really critical since we can use a MicroSD memory card to expand its capacity, anyway it is something to correct in the future, we believe that a device like this It should include at least 32GB of capacity.

We can buy the Wetek Play 2 for prices of 109.90 euros with a tuner or for 99.90 euros without a tuner on the manufacturer's official website. In both cases we must add 15 euros of freight and highlight the possibility of paying safely through Paypal.
