Microsoft has recently released the major update 1903 for Windows 10, which is the May 2019 Update.

Windows 10 May 2019 Update vs Fall Update

With this new update, among many other benefits, Microsoft sought to make changes to the Windows 10 kernel to improve overall CPU performance. Other changes relevant to gamers include updates to WDDM (display driver model) and an update to DirectX 12, which now has the variable-rate shading feature. Similar technology is available in Vulkan, and has already been implemented in games like "Wolfenstein": The New Colossus."

Knowing that the Windows 10 May 2019 Update aims to improve performance compared to Windows 10 Fall 2018 Update (1809), the people of Techpowerup wanted to check if there really is a performance gain or if everything remains the same.

Game performance comparison

What was done is a performance comparison of 21 games using two graphics cards: RTX 2080 Ti and Radeon VII under the operating systems Windows 10 1903 (May 2019 Update) and the old Windows 10 1809 (Fall Update).

Games were set with resolutions of 1920 × 1080 (Full HD), 2560 × 1440 (1440p) and 3840 × 2160 pixels (4K). The graph shows the percentages of gain / loss on Windows 1809, with three data points per game, each of which represents the three resolutions in the order "Full HD", "1440p" and "4K". The first chart below covers the RTX 2080 Ti, and the second chart covers AMD's Radeon VII.

What can be said about these results? That the performance gain when moving to Windows 10 May 2019 Update is testimonial. The game with the highest performance gain was Civilization VI under Radeon VII with just 3% gain, while there are other games that drop their performance by 2%. Like the Assassins Creed Odyssey or the Far Cry on the Nvidia graphics card.

If averaged, the performance gain with the new Windows 10 update is 0.05% performance with the Nvidia graph and 0.16% with the AMD graph.
