This decision of the company affected many users and has generated considerable controversy since it was announced. Microsoft required vendors to enter a registration key to point out which models are compatible with Meltdown and Specter patches.

Microsoft backtracks

During testing, it was found that there were vendors injecting code into parts of the kernel that they were trying to repair. Some antivirus programs even blocked computers after installing the necessary security patches. So Microsoft made the decision that those without the registration key would not be able to receive their update.

What the company wanted was for antivirus to update its products. But it actually created a lot of problems and confusion. Since not all antivirus added this registry key. Something that ended up causing problems for Windows 7 and 8 users, who do not have Windows Defender.

It seems that Microsoft itself has finally realized that the measure was not the best. So they have unlocked it for Windows 10. So Windows Defender is not going to block security updates for users. A decision that surely is received in a positive way by users.
