Yesterday it was revealed that Microsoft is working on a new Chromium web browser to replace Edge and compete more directly with Chrome and Firefox. Then it was also reported that Microsoft is working on another light iteration of its operating system, which would come under the name Windows Lite.

Windows Lite will be Microsoft's new lightweight operating system

Although Microsoft is believed to be targeting "Chromebooks" with this operating system, it is unclear whether it is referring to the devices themselves, or simply its users. The latter seems more likely, since Microsoft will probably not be able to convince Google to implement the operating system of a competing company on its devices. Despite referring to the operating system as Windows 10 Lite, there is a good chance that Microsoft's developing operating system doesn't use the Windows brand at all. That doesn't necessarily mean it won't share features with Windows 10, but it might look completely different.

Aside from a possible aesthetic change, Windows Lite will differ from Windows 10 by running only Universal Windows Platform (UWP) applications and Progressive Web Applications (PWA). Windows 10 Lite will also always be connected, lightweight in terms of resource consumption and will offer almost instantaneous boot times. In other words, the operating system likely won't target gamers or professionals, who tend to want full control over the apps they install, as well as the connectivity of their machine.

Most likely, this operating system is designed to appeal to those who only need the basics of their systems, such as word processing, entertainment applications like Netflix or Hulu, and web browsing. Microsoft's Build 2019 conference is likely where the company announces its latest project to the public.
