Changing the course of history… armed to the teeth. The father of "shoot'em up" debuts on the new consoles with a wildest and funniest vision of WWII. So we would have to fight if the Nazis had won.
The most popular and scariest historical fiction is to think what would have happened if the Nazis had won World War II. In Wolfenstein The New Order, that's the starting point. After Private Blazkowicz was seriously wounded in the assault on General Calavera's fortress (in an intense prologue) we woke up in 1960, in a hospital in Poland, to discover that the Germans discovered "the bomb" before the US.UU. and now they dominate the world. From that moment on, 15 more levels await us (around 14 hours of play) in which we must change History “for the brave”.
THE NARRATIVE IS A KEY PIECE IN WOLFENSTEIN.
Although it is a war "shooter", the importance of the secondary characters and the video sequences, which enjoy a brilliant accomplishment, is striking.
On the one hand, we have the protagonists: Blazko, Nurse Anya and the other members of the Resistance, who show us the most human and miserable side of the war (for which they do not hesitate to resort to sad, cruel moments or even scenes sexual). And on the other, as true stars, the four Nazis, who are responsible for making life impossible for us: General Calavera, Geller, Frau Engel and his "pet" Bubi. Their hysterical and ruthless behavior makes them formidable adversaries.
The tone of the game is very similar to Tarantino's film "Damn Bastards", and even the musical treatment (the same sounds a song by Wagner or Beethoven as a piece of rock) reminds of the works of this director. To round off this setting, the scenarios are very varied, from a prison in Berlin to an underwater base, London or the Moon, and convey the grandeur of Nazi constructions: cement, steel, glass and flags, with a frightening coldness.
Two-handed destruction.
When we pick up the weapon of a fallen enemy we can decide whether to keep the ammunition or wield both at the same time (both weapons must be the same). If we are in this “dual” mode we cannot aim the sights, but our firepower (and consumption) is doubled.
THE RHYTHM OF THE GAME CHANGES FOR MOMENTS
The New Order alternates frenetic combat and many infiltration zones, in which we are armed with a knife or with the pistol with a silencer. In general, this title moves in a perfect balance between a war game and the “adventurous” and investigative overtones like the ones we saw in Bioshock. And there is no shortage of sequences on board vehicles; some of us can fly them freely (like a car, a submarine or an armored robot) and others move “on rails”, like the helicopter that takes us to a bridge built over the Strait of Gibraltar!
Supernatural references have been removed from previous installments of the saga, but on the contrary, Nazi technology is very advanced. They have gigantic tanks with electric cannons, robot dogs, armored soldiers, and weapons that evolved from classic models. In particular, Blazkowicz is made with a plasma cutter, which we are improving with pieces spread across the stage, which serves as a weapon and also allows cutting chains, bars and metal plates, something that is quite useful to solve some puzzles.
And speaking of improvements, we can activate advantages (such as the "perks" of multiplayer games) depending on our game mode - stealth, tactical, assault or explosives. These elements give more depth to the development of "shoot everything that moves".
WOLFENSTEIN HAS NO MULTIPLAYER MODES
But in return it offers a very replayable campaign, with five levels of difficulty. At the end of the prologue we have to make a choice that determines two different story lines, with the same levels and also all the scenarios have alternative routes and secret areas, which are not easy to find. We can collect Enigma codes to open new options, gold and documents, like in the classics.
Another wink that the veterans of this saga will appreciate is the possibility of playing the first Wolfenstei in a "nightmare" or having to collect kits to fill our health (and pieces of enemy armor to increase armor). We also have no limitations on the number of weapons we can carry, and most can be wielded with two hands, which is essential to wipe out massive final enemies. All of these design pieces, which might seem "dated, " work perfectly, because the shootings are so much fun.

Its technical section convinces, without becoming the definitive game of the generation. The models are detailed to the maximum (both characters and weapons) and the lighting and particle effects, which are one of the strengths of the new consoles, attract attention. However, some textures and collisions are not up to scratch.
The dubbing into Spanish, with many lines in German, is excellent, although the lip synchronization is irregular. The best is enemy intelligence, which is no longer limited to soldiers who appear behind a cover and hide again. These Nazis search for us, throw grenades and try to surround us. High difficulty and well managed.
THE NEWORDERS IS, IN DEFINITVA, A VERY CAREFUL DEVELOPMENT
True to the original, and capable of incorporating a very "personal" narrative between skirmishes. Technically it is very remarkable, and it also has a cast of memorable characters, who manage to involve us in this alternative History. The setting and its duration (high enough to be a campaign) also play in its favor. But above all, the best thing is that it is very fun: the feeling of having a weapon in your hands to end hordes of enemies is brutal.
FINAL ASSESSMENT
The best
- The setting, characters and plot, get a great campaign. It is very fun from the moment we hit the first shot. Graphics, outstanding models and large levels, with multiple routes. Sound, brutal BSO, with good dubbing in Spanish, but at Sometimes the sync fails.
Worst
- It doesn't have multiplayer, which is a shame considering the weapon design, some technical details like the timing of the dubbing or some textures.
