The Wi-Fi Alliance has introduced its new WPA3 certificate, which will lead to a next generation of Wi-Fi security, bringing new capabilities to enhance personal and business network protections.

Wi-Fi Alliance Introduces Key Features of WPA3

WPA2 has been the reference certificate for more than a decade, WPA3 comes to offer new features focused on simplifying the security of Wi-Fi networks, enabling stronger authentication and offering greater strength. The Wi-Fi Alliance has confirmed that WPA2 devices will continue to interoperate and provide recognized security.

WPA3 comes with two different modes of operation: WPA3-Personal and WPA3-Enterprise. All WPA3 networks use the latest security methods, do not allow legacy outdated protocols, and require the use of protected management frameworks to maintain network resilience.

WPA3-Personal offers more flexible, password-based authentication, even when users choose passwords that do not meet typical complexity recommendations. WPA3 leverages Concurrent Peer Authentication (SAE) to provide stronger protections against third-party password guessing attempts. As for WPA3-Enterprise, it offers the equivalent of 192-bit cryptographic strength, providing additional protections for networks that transmit sensitive data, such as government or finance.

The Wi-Fi Alliance introduced enhancements and new features earlier this year to ensure that WPA2 maintains strong security protections as the wireless landscape evolves. WPA2 continues to be mandatory for all Wi-Fi certified devices.

WPA3 maintains interoperability with WPA2 devices through a transition mode of operation, and users can continue to trust that they are protected when connected to certified networks.
