Along with increased focus on cheap mid-range and high-end smartphones, there have also been plenty of low-end phones released that have proven impressive. Of course, these devices aren't perfect and often have the essentials to work, but Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi is looking to rock the market with its latest addition to the affordable Redmi series. Is this device an attractive option? We will discover that in this review of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 3
Design
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 comes protected in a small cardboard box, where on its cover we see an image of the product and in larger letters the model. On the back, the number indicates the two IMEI numbers and the serial number of the product.
Once we open it we find the following bundle:
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.MicroUSB cable and wall charger. Documentation.
The Redmi Note 3 brings some features from its predecessor, but when it comes to build quality, the Note 3's metal construction is in contrast to the matte plastic finish of the Redmi Note 2. That's not to say that build quality and design of the Redmi Note 2 was bad, but just by looking and feeling the new Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is certainly something that users will appreciate, and it is a very pleasant surprise, given its fair price.
The curved edges and sides of the device make the experience better to handle, but the metal body is very slippery, so using this great phone with one hand is not so easy. The metal backrest at the back in the lower and upper area is not only to aid in antenna reception, but also provides a good grip when holding the device in landscape orientation.
Taking a look around the entire device, the power and volume buttons are on the right side, and provide excellent tactile responsiveness. The headphone jack and the microUSB port on the top and bottom respectively are very well located. At the back is the unit's only speaker, along with the new addition of a fingerprint scanner located under the camera. There are three navigation keys, the first being assignable to open any of the recent applications or an application menu.
Screen and fingerprint reader
The Redmi Note 3 comes with a 5.5-inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080, resulting in a pixel density of 403 ppi and a usable area of 72%. The display is pretty good overall, but it lacks some contrast and saturation, and there are certainly devices that fall into this price range with a better display. The readability in the sun and the minimum brightness level are especially good, however the adaptive brightness feature also works very well. To fight dust and scratches, it incorporates Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
About the fingerprint reader we can only speak wonders. It is incredible how the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 that has such a tight price, is capable of incorporating a fingerprint reader at the height of terminals such as the Nexus 5X, Sony Xperia Z5 or the iPhone 6s itself. Got it for Xiaomi!
Performance and hardware
Inside, the Redmi Note 3 comes with a MediaTek Helio X10 octa-core processor, clocked at 2 GHz, backed by the PowerVR G6200 (GPU) graphics card, and is available in 2 or 3 GB of RAM. Multitasking works very smoothly, so 2GB of RAM would be more than enough. In performance, the Redmi Note 3 performs all the processes in a surprising way, considering its price is a wonder. Our model is 3GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory.
All functions work very smoothly, and minimal lag is perceived when the processor performs more intensive tasks. Games also play very nicely on the device, but be aware that this is true only when the device is in Performance Mode, and there are some delays when the battery is set to another mode.
The options of 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage are available, but it is not possible to expand their storage through a microSD card, which means that most users will surely opt for 32 GB storage. The device also includes connectivity options, but given the fact that it is not officially available in several countries, access to 4G LTE networks is enabled according to the ROM that it incorporates. Call quality is another feature that stands out on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.
The rear speaker of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is mid-level, and when it gets quite loud, the sound quality is clear. The speaker is also very easy to silence when the device is placed on a flat surface, as is the case with most rear speaker configurations. A new improvement in this device is the incorporation of the fingerprint reader on the back, which is ideal and comfortable for the fingertips. We confirm that it turns out to be fast and very accurate. When compared to a high-end like the Nexus 6P, the scanner may not be as fast, but the accuracy is so good, it's fantastic to see a budget smartphone with this quality.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 battery cannot be replaced by the user, but what is a great advantage is its 4, 000 mAh capacity. Battery life could be better, but it does the trick by offering between 4 and a half to 5 hours of life with the display in use, and the device quietly comes to a full day of use. However, there is no possibility of fast charging, although with the long battery life it is compensated.
WE RECOMMEND YOU AORUS M2 Review in Spanish (Complete analysis)Camera
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 comes with a 13-megapixel rear camera signed by a Samsung sensor, incorporates an f / 2.2 aperture and autofocus. The front camera is 5 megapixels with an f / 2.0 aperture. In general, the camera allows a good image quality. But it seems that there is still a little to improve the saturation in the captures.
As we saw in the Xiaomi Mi4C, its software is quite complete and allows you to make various forms of capture shots and apply different filters. Something that will really like is the possibility of activating the HDR option… the truth is that it shows like night and day when we activate it. I leave you some sample images that we have released:
Operating system with Miui 7
In the software aspect, it is where Xiaomi seems to have injected the greatest value into the Redmi Note 3. The latest version of MIUI 7 is based on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, but with a very strong interface, where you will not notice the Material Design. However, it offers a large number of customization options and a number of functionalities.
Since this version of the device is designed for the Chinese market, Google applications do not come pre-installed, but when you buy it from Igogo it comes pre-installed. It is important to note that in the event that it does not come with yours, there is a global version of the device that will be available shortly with the integrated Google applications.
Final words and conclusion
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 does not have great improvements that justify the change of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, but its design is really impressive. But without a doubt it is a very difficult device to beat due to its quality / price range. Although the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 has its shortcomings and could improve the integrated camera… this smartphone excels in functions where its competitors do not, including its fantastic design, build quality, exceptional battery life, and the inclusion of a fast and accurate fingerprint reader. We are hardly going to find a device for less than 200 euros with all these characteristics in Spain.
Currently we can buy the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 in two different versions, the first with 16 GB of internal memory with 2 GB of RAM and a second with 32 GB of storage and 3 GB of RAM. Without a doubt, a 100% recommended purchase.
