The Sony Xperia Z5 is one of the last major releases of 2015. HTC, Samsung, LG, Huawei and Motorola have already presented their international cups for the second half of the year. Sony decided to launch a new device for the Xperia Z series a few months after the worldwide launch of the Xperia Z3 Plus. We decided to compare the Sony star with the Galaxy S6 Edge. Could it be that the Xperia Z5 can outshine the Korean giant?
Xperia Z5 vs Galaxy S6 Edge: Design and finish
Both devices share the same materials in their construction: glass and aluminum. We can say that the construction of both is quite similar, including the screen size selected by these manufacturers (difference of 0.1 inch). Sony has yet to optimize the edges of its devices, making the Japanese model slightly larger than the Galaxy S6 Edge.
Leaving these similarities aside, we can say that each manufacturer has worked on some aspects of their projects differently, such as the Xperia Z5, which has straighter lines and different physical buttons from the Galaxy S6 Edge. The Sony model is in its fifth generation and has no drastic changes, while Samsung, in addition to replacing plastic with glass, brought a new visual approach to the member of the Galaxy S line.
Samsung, for its part, has decided to make some changes to the visual characteristics of the Galaxy S line. For a more premium look, the back cover of the Galaxy S6 Edge is not removable and the microSD card holder was abandoned. With the Galaxy S6 Edge, the company started a change in its design philosophy, however, to achieve an almost impeccable result, the elimination of traditional features of the series was necessary.
Both devices have an excellent finish, and have been designed with different objectives: the Xperia Z5 is the continuation of the Xperia Z series with few changes, while the Galaxy S6 Edge represents a change in the personality of the Galaxy S line.
Xperia Z5 vs Galaxy S6 Edge: Display
The screen of the Xperia Z5 does not exceed what is necessary to offer a high quality user experience. The device has a 5.2-inch IPS LCD screen with Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) and 424 ppi. The resolution can be disappointing for users expecting higher numbers.
In the Galaxy S6 Edge the screen is the great differential, because we have a continuity of the screen on the right and left sides of the mobile phone (dual-edge). The S6 Edge's screen is 5.1 inches in size, with QHD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels) and a pixel density per inch of 577 dpi. The display technology used by Samsung is Super AMOLED, which gives it a more vivid color view and a high level of contrast.
The panel of the Galaxy S6 Edge is one of the best among Android smartphones, and its price, internationally, is compatible with the Sony Xperia Z5. The 5.1-inch ones are great for accommodating QuadHD resolution. Furthermore, the energy efficiency provided by AMOLED technology somewhat compensates for the high pixel density that appears on the model screen.
Xperia Z5 vs Galaxy S6 Edge: Software and special functions
Special features are what differentiate one model from another. The existence of these resources contribute to the user's time choosing one of these devices, since the work done by Sony is not equal to the resources delivered by Samsung. Exclusive features, at least for manufacturers, are a lure to attract new users and keep the brand's fan base active.
Both devices have a scanner for digital printing. Sony housed the button on the right side, while Samsung brought it next to the home button characteristic of the Galaxy S line.
The Galaxy S6 Edge has some useful apps built into the TouchWiz user interface, such as S-Health and S-Voice. However, these applications have been introduced in other generations of the Galaxy S line, and are not exclusive to the device.
Sony invests in well-known resources, such as the possibility of using the Xperia Z5 connected to PlayStation 4. In addition, the waterproof protection (IP68) is a differential that is also present in its predecessors.
Xperia Z5 vs Galaxy S6 Edge: Performance
The performance of the Galaxy S6 Edge is impeccable and, incidentally, one of the best among devices running on Android, which was only surpassed with the arrival of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge +, which share the same Exynos processor. 7420 64-bit, but with 4 GB of RAM. The S6 Edge has 3GB of RAM, with good fluidity during system operation and multitasking.
The Sony Xperia Z5 offers good processing thanks to the Snapdragon 810 (also used in the Xperia Z3 +) and 3GB of RAM. However, the processor presents a slight warm-up problem, although it is one of the most powerful in the category. This problem of overheating is known with the episode of the Xperia Z3 + camera, which stopped working after a few seconds of its start.
WE RECOMMEND YOU This is the first image of the Motorola RAZR foldableHowever, the heating caused in the Xperia Z3 + may be an exception, since in the OnePlus 2 (also with Snapdragon 810), this problem is less noticeable. Sony has made some improvements to the Xperia Z5's software to prevent overheating, and despite the device getting hot, no app closes unexpectedly. The Snapdragon 810 is a complex and efficient processor, capable of competing with the Exynos 7420 in some situations.
Xperia Z5 vs Galaxy S6 Edge: Camera
The new Sony Xperia Z5 has a different sensor from its predecessors. The number of megapixels, which was expanded to 23 in the main camera, and a new image stabilization technology that works very well has been included.
As we have already mentioned in other articles, the number of megapixels is not always the most important element in a device, since the Galaxy S6 Edge captures excellent images through a 16 MP sensor. This number was surpassed by some competitors, such as the Moto X and The Xperia Z3, but none of them was able to show results as good as the S6 Edge.
Xperia Z5 vs Galaxy S6 Edge: Battery
Sony and Samsung are striving to reduce the size of their batteries in favor of the design of their devices. Still, both devices never cease to please when the issue is battery life.
Sony has presented satisfactory results with the Xperia Z series devices, even with the capacity reduction between the Xperia Z2 and the Xperia Z3 +. With the Xperia Z5, Sony promises autonomy for two whole days in moderate use. We will have to carry out more specific tests to verify this autonomy promised by the manufacturer.
Xperia Z5 vs Galaxy S6 Edge: Final Conclusion
Sony's inability to present a truly innovative model is shocking. The Xperia Z5 is a great device, but it doesn't compete on equal terms with the Galaxy S6 Edge, mainly in the race for the best Android smartphone of the year. However, Sony is able to announce the Xperia Z6 in a few months with new optimizations and few innovations. Perhaps so far the Japanese company has learned something with the launch of the Xperia Z5, and decides to offer a new device that is capable of overthrowing the current industry leader.
