One of the benefits of ARM architecture is a much higher level of energy efficiency than can be achieved with Intel and AMD x86 processors. One of the prime exponents of this RISC architecture is Qualcomm, which has already begun shipping its 48-core Qualcomm Centriq 2400 processors to dominate the servers.

Qualcomm Centriq 2400 arrives to dominate servers

Qualcomm Centriq 2400 is a very peculiar processor that was announced more than a year ago and is now on the market. It is a silicon manufactured in 10 nm and that makes use of the ARM architecture to offer a total of 48 processing cores at a frequency of 2.6 GHz. This enables excellent performance with much lower power consumption than with Intel and AMD processors. The 48 cores are connected to each other using an internal bus that reaches a bandwidth of 250 GB / s to avoid any type of bottleneck. It includes no less than 6 0 MB of L3 cache for all cores and 512 KB of L2 cache for each core.

As for the memory, it has a six-channel DDR4 controller that is compatible with a maximum of 768 GB of RAM. We continue to see its features and we came across 32 PCI Express 3.0 x16 lanes along with six PCI Express controller and an ARM TrusZone security engine.

All this allows to achieve a performance that is 45% higher than an Intel Xeon Platinum 818 while being four times more efficient with the use of energy. This has been made possible by Samsung's 10nm FinFET process which has resulted in a die size of 398mm2.

The ARM architecture is advancing by leaps and bounds and the performance gap with x86 is narrowing, in fact the first laptops with Windows 10 and a Snapdragon 835 processor are already on the way.
