You can now run windows applications on a chromebook

Chromebooks can be a good alternative to Windows laptops. Some of the main reasons are that it is generally cheaper equipment, with a longer battery life, and safer. However, they have an important handicap: not all services and applications are compatible. Fortunately, thanks to CodeWeaver's CrossOver application, it is now possible to run Windows programs on Chrome OS.

Windows programs and games on Chrome OS

The CrossOver Chromebook application developed by the CodeWeaver team enables Chrome OS users to run Windows programs on Chromebook computers without delay and in a separate window. To achieve this objective, the application in question is based on the Wine-based application, which currently supports more than 13, 000 applications, including Microsoft Office and Steam. This implies that, thanks to CrossOver, any user will have access to their library of Steam games from their Chromebook.

It has been a whopping twenty years since CodeWeavers developers first opened Windows programs for the operating system and since then, they have also managed to do the same for Apple's macOS. Now comes the support for Chrome OS that was introduced last year, although only as a preliminary version that could only be accessed by invitation. Now, one year later, the beta version of CrossOver for Chrome OS is now available on Google Play.

At least for the moment, CrossOver for Chromebook is a totally free tool, however, when you leave the beta phase and the final and official launch occurs, you will have to pay for it. The price is not yet known, however, considering that the support for Mac and Linux has a cost of $ 59.95, we can already get a pretty rough idea.

CrossOver for Chromebook is compatible only with computers running Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher, as long as they also use an x86 processor, although their compatibility could be extended by the time of the official launch.
