AMD has had a good streak in recent years and can't seem to do anything wrong. If this China Times report is to be believed, AMD's 5nm products for Zen 4 processors will be landing in stores in early 2021 and mass production is slated for 2020.

Zen 4 processors are projected for early 2021 with a 5nm TSMC node

TSMC appears to be well advanced in 5nm production, and in less than a year it will already be mass-producing the first silicon with this process node. Among its most important clients is AMD.

The three clients that will be able to take control of the first wave of chips in 5 nm would be Apple, HiSilicon and AMD. Although it is not surprising that Apple receives the first bite, it is interesting to see that Nvidia does not appear in this list.

As discussed, the reason Nvidia has yet to make the jump to 7nm is because of performance issues. If Nvidia is no longer able to get the first bite out of the 5nm node then you might be at a disadvantage if AMD decides to use this node for their Navi GPUs. Recall that Nvidia continues to use the 12nm FinFET node.

According to the report, TSMC's 5nm process has crossed 50% throughput (the same as it currently has at 7nm) and monthly production capacity has increased from 50, 000 units to 70, 000 units with 80, 000 units on the horizon. The new 5nm process is 1.8x more dense than the previous 7nm process (offering even more scalability for AMD's MCM philosophy) and can increase clock speeds by 15%. This means that a CPU and GPU that are currently averaging 4.4 GHz and 1700 MHz respectively, will be able to reach the 5.0 GHz and 1955 MHz marks quite easily.

Of course, Zen 4 processors slated for 2021 are going to take advantage of this new processing node, and probably the Radeon Navi GPUs will be around that time, too. We will keep you informed.
