Unboxing and design

Acer Predator Triton 900 is undoubtedly an exercise in design and performance at the best level, in which the company has wanted to demonstrate that when it comes to manufacturing extreme laptops, they are unrivaled. Surely none of us have forgotten the Acer Predator 21-X as one of the most powerful and expensive notebooks ever built. And in terms of pure performance, the model that we cover today is not more powerful, but also not extremely expensive.

The Bundle in which this laptop has come to us consists of a white box without too much fuss in terms of design. The day it goes on sale officially we will surely find a much more striking presentation and worthy of showing, this has not been the case. Inside we only find the colossal charger of no less than 354W and its respective power cable. Without a doubt, it is one of the largest we have encountered in a long time.

If something stands out with the naked eye of the Acer Predator Triton 900 it is the design it has. It is based on a structure made entirely of aluminum of a quality that few teams come to judge by the visual appearance, the finishes and the thickness of the material. For the beveling and lithography of the materials, a CNC turning process has been used.

Regarding measurements, we do not have official data yet, but our tape measure is 428 mm wide, 310 mm deep and 25 mm thick. Figures that make it almost a desktop PC, mainly for its large diagonal of 17.3 inches and considerable frames as we will see now, although thin, we must say.

On the entire surface we have a glossy finish without too many reflections and a really elegant and striking grayish color. In the upper area we also have the Predator logo with cyan blue LED lighting. These finishes do not seem to leave any trace, so it is a very welcome detail. Surely all those that most attract your attention are those elements on the sides, they are hinges and now you will see what they are capable of doing.

Well they do what you are seeing. Basically these aluminum hinges are responsible for holding the screen, which can adopt almost any type of position always in the upper plane, both in normal mode, frame, and tablet type. Yes, a 4K Tablet. The touch screen area is entirely made of glass, although we are not aware that it has Gorilla Glass protection. Precisely being glass, we do not have an Anti Glare finish, so outdoors the reflections will make quite an appearance.

The system looks very robust and also strong enough to keep this screen in a static position in any position. Acer has studied this system well from what we see, and it will be something that will be appreciated after a long time of use. As we say, it is a convertible 2-in-1 laptop, so the system is specially built to place the screen above the keyboard.

We take advantage of the natural position of a laptop to better see the Acer Predator Triton 900 work area. The main layout consists of a keyboard without a numeric pad, or at least without a visible pad, and instead the touchpad has been chosen. Right at the lateral ends we have the two speakers that sound dramatically and in the upper area a glass that makes part of the cooling system visible that also has interior lighting. And next to this glass, an air suction grille just on the left side.

An extremely spectacular design and that is clearly inherited from the 21-X although with somewhat less aggressive aesthetic finishes, but without missing a bit of gaming personality. The entire area mentioned, also has an aluminum finish identical to the exterior.

We continue to explore its design to reach the connection elements, which for the wide space we have, is also not out of the ordinary. Starting from the left side area, we see at a glance two 3.5 mm Jack connectors for audio and microphone, although one of them supports the microphone plus audio combo. And of course a USB 3.1 Gen1.

You may have noticed that in the right area of ​​the image we have a couple of independent elements, it is a hinge system that deploys a USB 3.1 Gen1. In it we can connect a flash drive and keep it stored on the side without it being exposed in the outside area. In the left area we have the considerably large heat sink outlet.

Let's go to the other area, the right, in it we have a rather interesting connectivity, in addition to the power button that itself is located in the side area. We then find another USB 3.1 Gen1 along with a USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C that we intuit comes directly from the graphics card to be able to connect a VR glasses for example, or any peripheral that we want, since we must know that these USB also work in a way ordinary.

And it's not all friends, not at all, we still have a USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C port that, as you may have guessed, includes Thunderbolt 3 that gives us a speed of 40 Gb / s. We finish with the back area of Acer Predator Triton 900 in which we only have a DisplayPort connector and another HDMI connector, both of normal size to connect more monitors. The power connector that we have, is of course dedicated and with an input of 19.5V DC at 16.9A. Also in this area we will have air vents on both sides, so we hope that the cooling system is efficient.

Surely you will agree with us that it is a laptop with a unique design, in which Acer has taken out of its sleeve an excellent idea to be able to turn a laptop into a beautiful giant Tablet. Although it is true that these hinges take up a lot of space on the sides of the equipment.

Finally we reach the lower area, where we will only find four wide rubber feet and a panel completely made of aluminum. in it there are numerous vents that add to the multiple openings that we have already seen on the sides.

If something stands out in this Acer Predator Triton 900 it is undoubtedly its spectacular screen, and that it is one of its strongest points in addition to the design. It is a 17.3-inch multitouch touch panel with IPS technology that is capable of giving us a native resolution in UHD, or what is the same, 3840 x 2160 pixels that make a density of no less than 255 dpi. Its refresh rate is 60 Hz as we can imagine, and it also includes Nvidia G-Sync technology, which is widely used in the Predator range.

There we have it in Tablet mode, although we can also place it on a higher horizontal plane, ideal for painters and professional graphic design. The image quality is simply spectacular, and not precisely the vividness of the colors, but for the naturalness with which they are represented, although this will be better verified with our ColorMunki Display and the HCFR software.

For starters, the delta calibration is not too optimal, at least with the comparative color palette that is the default by HCFR. Although we see some values ​​that are not too high either and that could be largely corrected with a good panel calibration. Something that we do see that is very good is the RGB color adjustment, the Gamma levels and the color temperature that is correctly maintained at point D65.

We also take the opportunity to see that the maximum contrast of this screen is 1152: 1, a very good figure for an IPS panel, and that reflects its great quality. Which, by the way, in this case there is no trace of bleeding. On the other hand, the white levels are very good, and the blacks a little elevated, which coincides with those 0.30 cd / m ² obtained in the contrast test.

The spectacular color space of this monitor deserves special mention, worthy of the quality of a professionally designed one. We have a space that clearly exceeds sRGB and is almost perfect on DCI-P3, albeit with a shift in green. We have also wanted to introduce one of the most complete spaces today, Rec. 2020 to better see the scope of the monitor. We can see that the gray scale remains perfectly within the D65 point without major problems. Great work here from Acer.

Webcam and microphone

This time it is worth talking a little about the webcam and the capture system of this Acer Predator Triton 900. In this case, what we find is a Full HD sensor (1920 x 1080p), which at least greatly improves the image quality of the typical HD that we always find in laptops.

It will also be able to record videos in 1920 × 1080 at 60 FPS, although honestly a laptop of this price deserved at least a 4K sensor that was consistent with the screen. The audio capture system consists of a double microphone with an omni-directional pattern that records in very good quality, more or less the standard to have quality communication through video chats.

Touchpad and keyboard

It is time to talk a little more about the Acer Predator Triton 900 keyboard and touchpad which have a lot of crumb and details to comment on.

We will start with the roof, and as you can guess, each of these low profile keys has a mechanical switch, it is the least we could ask for this price, right? The sensations that this keyboard gives us are very good, although it is clearly designed to play, since they are very linear switches and without any type of click sound. The activation path is minimal, so one of its strengths for gaming is speed, although not so advantageous that what we want is to write long hours. Nor could they lack the dual-function F keys and a total of five customizable buttons in the upper area of ​​the main keyboard.

But more than the keyboard, what will surely catch our attention is the peculiar touchpad. It is located just in the right side area of ​​the keyboard and is clearly quite higher than it is wide, in fact it is even too narrow considering that the screen is 4K resolution.

The main buttons are located independently from the panel, something that is necessary and very successful, because Acer has taken advantage of this peculiar touch pad to introduce a button that activates a numeric keypad mode on it with a nice backlight marking the lines of the keys and numbers. Personally, I really liked Acer's proposal with this innovative design. Very good work!

Network connectivity

The network connectivity in this Acer Predator Triton 900 is of very good quality and power. We have already commented on the part of ports that includes an RJ-45 connector that will give us a speed of 2.5 Gigabit per second in the wired network. For this, a Killer E3000 brand chip has been used that includes GameFast technology to obtain the lowest possible latency in network connections.

On the other hand, Wi-Fi connectivity is carried out thanks to a card under the M.2 CNVi interface such as the Intel Wireless-AC 9560NGW. This works in the 802.11 b / g / n / ac protocols in dual band 2 × 2 MU-MIMO at 1.73 Gbps and 160 MHz. This is for now the fastest chip of the brand, waiting for Wi-Fi cards with AX connectivity to arrive. The same chip includes Bluetooth 5.0 + LE connectivity.

Internal features and hardware

Surely many here will be surprised that we are not facing the top of the range components in the market in some cases, and honestly, we are too. In any case, in some of the elements it will be expandable, for example, RAM and storage.

We start with the best of everything, and it is nothing other than the graphics card. Here Acer has not disappointed and has placed us an Nvidia RTX 2080 Max-Q that is going to give us a graphic and gaming experience worthy of a top range laptop. For lovers of numbers, it is a Turing GPU that has 2944 CUDA Cores along with 368 Tensor and 37 RT that will be able to offer the best in real-time ray tracing and DLSS for laptops. Inside it is a total of 8 GB of GDDR6 memory at 14 Gbps with a 256-bit bus width at a speed of 384 GB / s. The numbers are, so the next thing will be to see the performance in games that it is going to offer us.

We continue with the CPU, we have one already well known, the Intel Core i7-8750H, so it seems that we will not have a version with Core i9 for now. It is a 6-core, 12-wire processor built using a 14nm manufacturing process and is already the 8th generation Intel Coffee Lake Mobile. It works at a base speed of 2.2 GHz and 4.1 GHz in turbo mode.

Along with this processor we also have another well-known configuration such as 16 GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM installed by means of two 8 GB SO-DIMM modules in Dual Channel configuration. Anyway, this hardware is expandable up to 32 GB.

The storage system has also left us quite surprised, as it is not what we expected, not at least when it comes to storage capacity. It then consists of a RAID 0 configuration (two drives in parallel) with two NVMe SSDs under PCIe x4 interface of 256 GB each. This makes a total of 500GB working at about 3, 500MB / s with no mechanical storage inside. We do not fully understand this space so small that, although it is fast, it does not adjust to the times.

Predator Sense software

As in the entire Acer Predator series, it incorporates the PredatorSense desktop application. It is ideal for monitoring and exact control of our system at all times.

Among its functions it allows us to change the lighting of our keyboard, perform overclocking, assign functionalities to the macro keys, control the fans, monitor the entire system and have access to the central applications. Without a doubt, one of the best applications that we have come across in this type of equipment.

Performance tests and games

SSD performance

Let's see the behavior of the RAID 0 of the SSD NVME with the well-known CristalDiskMark in its latest version.

As expected, we have spectacular reading and writing rates. Sequential reading climbs to 3, 525.2 MB / s and writing is nearing 3, 000 MB / s. The truth is that we are very happy with the result achieved by this team, but perhaps we would have liked more to have a total of 1 TB SSD than 512 GB, since its starting price is quite high.

CPU and GPU benchmarks

Now we will see the results in benchmarks with the Cinebench R15, PCMark 8 and 3DMark programs in the Fire Strike Ultra and normal tests .

The results obtained with Cinebench R15 show practically the same as in other computers with a similar CPU, and it is a shame that in the starting model we do not have the fantastic i9 for laptops. But with the i7-8750H we take full advantage of the RTX 2080 that it incorporates.

Gaming performance

To test the maximum performance that this laptop shields us, we have done all our tests in current games at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and the native one at 4K. As always, we have carried out the tests with the MSI Afterburner program, finishing the test in its entirety and repeating each test up to 3 times to perform the average, something that is already common.

Given the equipment's specifications and the excellent AeroBlade 3D cooling system, we obtain very good temperatures at rest and at maximum performance. Both the processor and the graphics card are in no danger from Thermal Throttling. Which speaks pretty well for the Triton 900's cooling.
