Just a few days ago, Apple has definitively stopped selling the last two products in the AirPort range that we could find in its catalog, the Extreme model and the Time Capsule model, thus marking the end of a parting period that started in 2016.
Apple's AirPort family says goodbye
The Cupertino company has officially stopped selling the last survivors of the AirPort family. Already last April, Apple announced that it was discontinuing the AirPort Express, but also stated that it would keep it on sale until the remaining stock of units was liquidated. And so it has been since last weekend, the only way to get one of these peripherals is through a seller who has stock.
Despite the fact that Apple no longer sells these products, the company has promised continuous software / firmware updates for the AirPort series to address potential security and stability issues that may arise. In fact, last August support for AirPlay 2 was added to the AirPort Express.
The beginning of the end started in 2016, when the firm of the bitten apple dissolved the team in charge of developing AirPort products (Express, Extreme and Time Capsule), something that did not turn out to be a surprise because the latest product updates date 2013 for the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule, and 2012 for the Express model.
It is not good news because it is very high quality products, especially the Time Capsule model, which I have. However, the low interest of the company, which now prefers to sell products from other brands, coupled with too high prices compared to other options on the market of similar quality, such as WD, have marked the end of the AirPort family.
