Airplay 2 arrives at the airport express through a software update
Table of contents:
Yesterday afternoon, Apple released a new firmware update for the 2012 AirPort Express 802.11n models. This new firmware, identified as version 7.8, introduces support for AirPlay 2.
Apple router finally receives AirPlay 2
The new version 7.8 of the firmware available for the AirPort Express 2012 802.11n models can be downloaded on these devices using the AirPort utility, a free application available for both iPhone, iPad and iPor touch.
As pointed out by MacRumors, some users who have already downloaded and installed the firmware update, have reported that they can use their AirPort Express together with other devices compatible with AirPlay 2 when they run iOS 11.4.1 or iOS 12 versions. An update to AirPlay 2, the 2012 AirPort Express models offer support for multiple audio rooms, while being able to work with other devices that include this technology such as the HomePod, Apple TV and Sonos speakers.
Since it appeared in the “Home” app as an AirPlay 2 accessory in the iOS 12 beta, much has been speculated around the idea that the AirPort Express would be updated to include support for this technology, which it has finally happened.
Last April, Apple announced the discontinuation of its entire range of wireless routers, including the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and AirPort Time Capsule. The model that receives this update today has been selling until its stocks are depleted, so it is no longer available, at least not in the brand's stores.
Based on this circumstance, it was not clear whether the Express model would indeed receive AirPlay 2 compatibility, but Apple did choose to be "generous" with customers who still use them. In fact, the company plans to provide service and parts for existing AirPort base stations over the next five years.
